BRONXVILLE, NY – For the Maritime College men's basketball team, the task was very simple entering Saturday's regular-season finale at Sarah Lawrence. Win and clinch a home game in the first round of the Skyline Conference Tournament. Mission accomplished. The Privateers (15-10, 11-5 Skyline) led wire-to-wire, earning their home game with a 70-48 dismantling of the Gryphons (7-18, 5-11 Skyline) at the Campbell Sports Center.
Maritime stormed out of the gate, taking the lead eight seconds into the game and never looking back. The Privateers made six of their first seven shots to open up a 13-2 advantage just 4:29 into the contest. After Maritime increased the margin to 22-10 at the 10:54 mark, Sarah Lawrence went on a 7-3 run to get back within six, 23-17.
Robbie Mitchell (Staten Island, NY) hit a layup on the other end, though, to start an 8-0 spurt that brought the gap back to 14 points, 31-17. The Gryphons responded again, however, trimming their deficit to eight, 33-25, at the break.
In the second half, Maritime's defense took over. Sarah Lawrence didn't make its first field goal of the period until the 10:02 mark, at which point the lead had ballooned to 58-32. A layup by
Jovan Germain (Brooklyn, NY) extended the cushion to a game-high 28 points at 60-32 with 9:23 left, and the Privateers wrapped up the regular season with a comfortable 70-48 win, their first at Sarah Lawrence since 2016.
Theo Noble (Bronx, NY) led four Privateers in double figures with 16 points. He also grabbed a team-high seven rebounds to go along with three assists and three steals.
Tyler Anderson (Smithtown, NY) finished with 13 points and two blocks, while
Ryan Donovan (North Salem, NY) had 12 points. Germain contributed 11 points off the bench, and
James O'Connell (East Williston, NY) handed out four assists. Maritime shot 46.8 percent (29-of-62) from the field and outrebounded Sarah Lawrence 41-27. The Privateers were 5-for-20 (25 percent) from three-point land and 7-for-9 (77.9 percent) at the charity stripe.
Chris Torres paced the Gryphons with 14 points. Eamon Kelly tallied 10 points, and Amos Grey recorded nine points while adding five rebounds and three assists. Sarah Lawrence was held to just 29.2 percent (14-of-48) shooting overall and 26.1 percent (6-of-23) from long range. The Gryphons went 14-for-18 (77.8 percent) at the free throw line.
The Privateers' 11 conference wins this season are their most since going 14-6 in Skyline play during the 2009-10 campaign. That was also the last time Maritime both qualified for and hosted a game in the Skyline Conference Tournament before Tuesday night.
Fourth-seeded Maritime will take on fifth-seeded Merchant Marine (13-12, 11-5 Skyline) in a quarterfinal matchup at Riesenberg Gymnasium at 7 p.m. on Tuesday. The Privateers won both meetings against the Mariners during the regular season.
