THROGGS NECK, NY – Evan Block (Seaford, NY) nearly had a triple-double in the Maritime College men's basketball team's matchup with John Jay on Wednesday night. He finished with 15 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists in the contest, as the Privateers (5-1) notched an 81-50 triumph over the Bloodhounds (3-4) at Riesenberg Gymnasium. It was Maritime's third win this season by at least 30 points after going 10 years without a 30-point victory.
The Privateers scored the first six points of the game and didn't allow a field goal until six minutes into the contest, when they were already ahead 12-3. Maritime opened up a 12-point cushion when
Chris Zaveckas (Merrick, NY) sank a trey to make it 19-7 midway through the first half before the Bloodhounds used an 11-5 run to cut the margin in half, 24-18. The Privateers held a 36-26 advantage at the break.
It was 39-30 when
Theo Noble (Bronx, NY) blocked a shot and set up
Tyler Anderson (Smithtown, NY) for a fast-break layup that ignited a 15-1 Maritime rally that extended the Privateers' cushion to 23 points, 54-31. John Jay got back within 17 at 65-48 with 7:14 remaining, but Maritime ended the game on a 16-2 spurt.
Vadzim Paiko's (Layton, UT) free throw with 21 seconds left closed out the 81-50 victory, the Privateers' largest since an 89-57 triumph over Berkeley on Feb. 9, 2010.
Noble scored 20 of his game-high 24 points in the second half, going 8-for-11 from the field in the period. He also pulled down five rebounds.
Aleksandar Begovic (Kotor, Montenegro) and
Jake Cosgrove (Seaford, NY) tallied eight points apiece, while Anderson
contributed six points to go along with six assists and two blocks.
Jovan Germain (Brooklyn, NY) made his first career start and collected seven boards, as the Privateers held a 39-34 edge on the glass. Maritime also forced 22 turnovers, with Block notching four steals. As a team, the Privateers shot 44.1 percent (30-of-68) from the field, 32.4 percent (11-of-34) from long range, and 66.7 percent (10-of-15) at the free throw line.
Isaac Holmes paced John Jay with 11 points. Garrison added nine points and seven rebounds for the Bloodhounds, who shot a combined 34.7 percent (17-of-49) from the floor. John Jay was just 3-for-19 (15.8 percent) from three-point land and 13-for-18 (72.2 percent) at the charity stripe.
On Friday night, the Privateers travel to West Point for an exhibition game against Army. The 6 p.m. contest, which will be broadcast on ESPN+, marks Maritime's first meeting with the Black Knights since Dec. 18, 2006. The Privateers' last matchup with a Division I opponent was a 96-44 loss at Columbia on Nov. 20, 2022.
