WEST POINT, NY – On Friday night, the Maritime College men's basketball team played an exhibition game at Army West Point. In its only contest against a Division I opponent this season, the Privateers fell to the Black Knights (1-7) by a 74-39 count at Christl Arena.
Poor shooting plagued Maritime in the first half. The Privateers' first basket didn't come until
Amadou Kouyate (Harlem, NY) made a layup at the 12:48 mark, and Maritime shot just 12 percent (3-of-25) in the opening 20 minutes, as Army West Point built a 38-6 halftime advantage.
Maritime opened the second half on a 15-8 run to pull within 46-21. The margin was cut to 21 points when a pair of
Evan Block (Seaford, NY) free throws made it 49-28 with 7:29 left, but the Privateers would get no closer. Army West Point extended its advantage to 74-36 before
Chris Zaveckas (Merrick, NY) sank a three-pointer to finish off the scoring in the 74-39 defeat.s
Theo Noble (Bronx, NY) and Block led the Privateers with eight points apiece. Block also had four rebounds and three assists. Zaveckas
finished with six points on a pair of second half treys, while Kouyate added six points of his own.
Aleksandar Begovic (Kotor, Montenegro) and
Jovan Germain (Brooklyn, NY) each pulled down four boards for Maritime, which shot a combined 26.4 percent (14-of-53) from the field. The Privateers were 6-for-29 (20.7 percent) from long range and 5-for-7 (71.4 percent) at the free throw line.
For the Black Knights, Josh Scovens notched game-highs with 11 points and eight rebounds. Ryan Curry tallied nine points and four assists, while Abe Johnson contributed eight points and five boards. TJ Small and Jackson Mayo each posted eight points for Army West Point, which shot 53.7 percent (29-of-54) from the floor, 33.3 percent (8-of-23) from three-point land, and 66.7 percent (8-of-12) at the charity stripe.
This was Maritime's final game before the start of conference play. The Privateers (5-1, 0-0 Skyline) visit Old Westbury (0-5, 0-0 Skyline) at 6 p.m. on Wednesday in their Skyline opener.
