Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Privateers Suffer First Loss of Season

SCHENECTADY, NY – On Sunday afternoon, the Maritime College men's basketball team took on Union in the championship game of the Sig Makofski Invitational.  The Privateers (4-1) saw their four-game winning streak to start the season come to an end, as the Garnet Chargers (5-0) notched a 76-69 victory at the Viniar Athletic Center.  Theo Noble (Bronx, NY) was named to the all-tournament team after averaging 21.0 points in two games on the weekend.

Noble, who had 19 points in the win over Hartwick on Saturday, finished with a game-high 23 points to go along with six rebounds.  Tyler Anderson (Smithtown, NY) posted 12 points and seven assists, while Evan Block (Seaford, NY) tallied eight points and nine boards.  Aleksandar Begovic (Kotor, Montenegro) pulled down nine rebounds of his own, as Maritime held a 43-39 advantage on the glass.  The Privateers shot 35.8 percent (29-of-81) from the floor, 22.6 percent (7-of-31) from three-point land, and 50 percent (4-of-8) at the charity stripe.

Maritime got off to a good start, building a 14-4 cushion midway through the first half.  Union pulled back within five at 28-23 with 2:33 left until halftime, but the Privateers responded with back-to-back treys from Noble and Block that pushed the margin back to 11 points, 34-23.  The lead was nine points, 34-25, at intermission.

The Privateers scored the first eight points of the second half, extending their advantage to 42-25.  However, after a Begovic layup made it 44-27, Union went on a 19-5 run to get within three, 49-46.  Jovan Germain (Brooklyn, NY) hit a three on the other end to start a 9-4 Maritime rally that increased the margin to eight points at 58-50 with 8:40 remaining.

Union responded with a 20-0 spurt, though, to take a 70-58 lead.  Noble hit a trey with 2:30 left to halt the Garnet Chargers' run and spark a Maritime comeback.  Another Noble three-pointer at the 39-second mark made it a five-point game, 74-69, but the Privateers would get no closer.  Tanner Tedesco hit a pair of free throws to close out Union's 76-69 win and hand Maritime its first loss of the season.

For the Garnet Chargers, Matthew Garside led the way with 20 points off the bench.  Luke McGarrity added 19 points, while Tedesco notched 17 points, seven rebounds and five assists.  Connor Cepiel secured 10 boards for Union, which shot a combined 51 percent (26-of-51) from the field.  The Garnet Chargers were 9-for-22 (40 percent) from long range and 15-for-18 (83.3 percent) at the free throw line.

After playing four straight away from home, the Privateers return to Riesenberg Gymnasium on Wednesday night for a 7 p.m. matchup with John Jay (3-3).
