THROGGS NECK, NY – The Maritime College men's and women's swimming & diving teams opened the 2023-24 season by hosting Purchase on Friday night. The women's squad won 10 of the 11 events en route to a 108-49 victory over the Panthers, while the Privateer men defeated Purchase by a score of 88-50 at the Riesenberg Aquatics Center.
After combining to win the women's 200 yard medley relay,
Mary Cirelli (Oreland, PA),
Lauren Barriteau (Laurelton, NY),
Taylor Niemiec (Stratford, CT) and
Jessica Magee (Smithtown, NY) earned all eight of Maritime's individual victories. Niemiec was first in three different events—the 50 yard freestyle (27.28), 100 yard freestyle (1:00.29) and 100 yard backstroke (1:18.66). Cirelli touched first in the 100 yard backstroke (1:11.29) and 200 yard individual medley (2:36.36), while Magee was victorious in both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving competitions.
In addition to winning the 200 yard freestyle (2:22.36), Barriteau earned a pair of second-place finishes. She was second behind Niemiec in the 100 breaststroke (1:48.41) and also took second in the 500 yard freestyle (6:31.02). Maritime's quartet of
Fiona Crean (Ocean Township, NJ),
Sarah Sciaratta (Oceanside, NY),
Aisling Donnelly (New City, NY) and
Kirsten Argueta (Englewood, NJ) capped the meet by placing first in the 200 yard freestyle relay, capping off the Privateers' 108-49 triumph.
On the men's side, Maritime's strong freshman class combined for six event wins.
Rowan Hayes (Floral Park, NY) notched three of those victories in the 50 freestyle (22.80), 100 freestyle (50.39) and 100 breaststroke (1:01.76).
Ryan Colombo (Cortland Manor, NY) picked up wins in the 200 freestyle (2:11.33) and 500 freestyle (5:51.38), while
Parker Endress (Hamburg, NY) took first in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:29.43.
Hayes and Endress were also on the Privateers' victorious 200 medley relay squad, where they were joined by
Will Kim (Westbury, NY) and
Liam McManus (Islip, NY). Kim added an individual triumph in the 100 backstroke, finishing in a 1:00.57 clocking. Overall, Maritime won the meet by an 88-50 count.
Maritime has a quick turnaround before returning to action. The Privateers travel to Kings Point on Saturday at 11 a.m. for the annual USMMA Memorial Invitational.
