Luongo Penalty Kick Lifts Maritime Past Cobleskill

THROGGS NECK, NY – On Saturday afternoon, the Maritime College men's soccer team welcomed Cobleskill to Reinhart Field for its home opener.  After a Cobleskill handball in the box gave Maritime a penalty kick in the 72nd minute, Thomas Luongo (Center Moriches, NY) buried it into the lower left corner for what would turn out to be the game-winner in the Privateers' 1-0 victory.

Maritime (1-1-0) created several early scoring chances over the first 10 minutes before Cobleskill (0-2-0) nearly took the lead in the 18th minute.  Cater Ciavardoni's low shot looked headed for the goal, but goalkeeper Augusto Lebron (Valley Stream, NY) stuck his foot out and made the save.  The Privateers had another solid opportunity in the 38th minute.  However, Fanis Tsatalios's (Wayne, NJ) shot was wide and the sides went into the break scoreless.

After the Fighting Tigers' Tanner Reisman hit the crossbar in the 50th minute, Maritime had a flurry of attempts on the other end, firing five shots in rapid succession.  The sequence included a shot by Justin Song (Syosset, NY) that looked destined for the back of the net before being played off the goal line by a Cobleskill defender.  Maritime finally broke through in the 72nd minute when the Fighting Tigers were whistled for a handball in the box and Luongo put away the penalty kick.

Lebron kept the score 1-0 with an 88th-minute save.  He also got a little help from the goal post, as Ciavardoni missed a wide-open net in the final minute.  Overall, Lebron (1-0-0) faced seven shots and made two saves.

Luongo's goal was his first since Sept. 16, 2019 against St. Elizabeth.  Maritime held a 19-7 edge in shots, with Cobleskill goalkeeper John Espinoza (0-1-0) recording a pair of saves.

This was the start of a four-game homestand for the Privateers.  Maritime takes on Five Towns (1-2-0) on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. in the back end of a doubleheader at Reinhart Field.  At 5 p.m., the Privateer women (1-0-0) square off against SUNY Delhi (0-1-1).
