Privateers Upended By Manhattanville

THROGGS NECK, NY – The Maritime College volleyball team began a four-match homestand on Tuesday night by welcoming Manhattanville to Riesenberg Gymnasium.  The Privateers (2-4, 1-2 Skyline) suffered their second straight loss, however, falling to the Valiants (9-2, 2-0 Skyline) by a score of 25-6, 25-12, 25-15.

Manhattanville easily took the first set, 25-6, then jumped out to a 7-0 advantage in the second frame.  The Valiants extended the margin to 17-6 before the Privateers went on a 6-1 run to pull within six, 18-12.  However, Manhattanville scored the final seven points of the set to earn a 25-12 win and take a 2-0 lead in the match.

In the third set, Manhattanville again built an early cushion, pulling ahead 12-3.  The Privateers responded with five straight points to trim their deficit to four, 12-8, but Maritime would get no closer.  The Valiants took the third set by a 25-15 count to close out the straight-sets victory.

Celyna Custodio (Danbury, CT) and Erica Pagano (Lawrence, NY) paced the Privateers with three kills apiece.  Pagano also had two service aces and six digs.  Victoria Cordero (Bronx, NY) added six digs of her own, while Brooke Kirchner (Lawrence, NY) distributed eight assists to go along with five digs.

For Manhattanville, Meghan Wildes led the way with seven kills.  Loren Hernandez finished with six kills and four aces, while Zoe Zols also tallied six kills.  Vianca Vital handed out 12 assists, and Caylee Premoli registered 11 assists to go along with five aces.  Grace Ballagas added a match-high eight digs for the Valiants, who hit .206 (27 kills, 13 errors, 68 attempts) as a team.

After playing on back-to-back days, Maritime has a day off before returning to action.  The Privateers host St. Joseph's LI (6-5, 1-0 Skyline) on Thursday at 7 p.m.
