THROGGS NECK, NY – The Maritime College volleyball team continued a busy string of five matches in six days by welcoming St. Joseph's LI to Riesenberg Gymnasium on Thursday night. The Privateers (2-5, 1-3 Skyline) were unable to come away with the victory, falling to the Golden Eagles (7-5, 2-0 Skyline) by a 25-12, 25-7, 25-11 count.
After the teams traded points early in the first set, St. Joseph's LI went on a 16-3 run to open up a 19-6 advantage. Maritime responded with four of the next five points to get within 20-10, but the Golden Eagles took the opening frame by a 25-12 count.
In the second set,
Kelly Kuhn (Lansdale, PA) and
Celyna Custodio (Danbury, CT) teamed up for a block that made it 4-3 St. Joseph's LI before the Golden Eagles pulled away for a 25-7 set win. St. Joseph's LI also took the third set, 25-11, to finish off the sweep.
Custodio
paced the Privateers with seven kills, and she added six digs.
Erica Pagano (Lawrence, NY) tallied five kills, while
Brooke Kirchner (Lawrence, NY) finished with 11 assists and seven digs.
Victoria Cordero (Bronx, NY) recorded a match-high nine digs for Maritime.
For St. Joseph's LI, Madison Gremli led the way with nine kills. Tara Langford had 21 assists to go along with nine digs and three service aces, and Kellianne Dempsey contributed seven digs. As a team, the Golden Eagles served 14 aces and hit .269 (27 kills, nine errors, 67 attempts).
On Saturday, the Privateers conclude their homestand with a pair of matches. Maritime takes on Sarah Lawrence (9-4) for a non-conference tilt at 10 a.m., then faces Baruch (10-6) at 3 p.m.
