Privateers Snap Skid With Tie Against Sarah Lawrence

THROGGS NECK, NY – After visiting Yeshiva for its only road contest in a seven-game stretch, the Maritime College men's soccer team returned home on Wednesday night to square off with Skyline Conference rival Sarah Lawrence.  The Privateers (1-4-2, 0-1-1 Skyline) took the lead on Jason Carseni's (West Babylon, NY) 63rd-minute goal, but the Gryphons (3-3-1, 0-1-1 Skyline) scored on a penalty kick in the 84th minute to earn a 1-1 draw at Reinhart Field.

Maritime had the game's first solid scoring chance in the 15th minute, when Jake Cosgrove's (Seaford, NY) shot went just high.  The Privateers nearly found the back of the net again in the 26th minute, but Chris Vazquez (Woodhaven, NY) saw his attempt saved by Sarah Lawrence goalkeeper Kian Silva.  Jake Rodriguez (Nanuet, NY) then fired one high in the 41st minute, and the contest went into halftime scoreless.

The Privateers finally broke through in the 63rd minute.  George Kanellopoulos (Bayside, NY) sent a low pass that drew Silva out of the net.  The ball got past the Sarah Lawrence goalkeeper, however, and found a waiting Carseni standing all alone next to the right post, and he tapped it in to give Maritime the lead.  It was Carseni's first goal since Aug. 30, 2019.

Goalkeeper Danny Madeira (New Rochelle, NY) helped preserve the 1-0 advantage, making four second-half saves.  Sarah Lawrence would tie the game in the 84th minute, though, as a Maritime handball in the box gave the Gryphons a penalty kick, and Nicholas Fajardo put it away for the equalizer.  The Privateers had a flurry of shots in the final five minutes, but each was off the mark and the contest ended in a 1-1 tie.

Augusto Lebron (Valley Stream, NY) started in goal for the Privateers and notched two saves before being relieved by Madeira (0-3-1), who was credited with the decision.  Silva (3-3-1) made five saves for Sarah Lawrence.

On Saturday night, the Privateers conclude the stretch where they played six out of seven at home by welcoming Mount St. Mary (2-4-2, 0-1-1 Skyline) to Reinhart Field for a 7 p.m. matchup.
