Privateers Fall to Potsdam

THROGGS NECK, NY – On Sunday afternoon, the Maritime College men's soccer team wrapped up its four-game homestand by welcoming Potsdam to Reinhart Field.  The Privateers (1-3-1) suffered their second straight loss, however, dropping a 3-0 decision to the Bears (3-1-0).

Potsdam benefitted from some good fortune in the 22nd minute, when a free kick deep in the Maritime side of the field deflected off a Privateers defender and into the net for an own goal.  Maritime had an opportunity to tie it seven minutes later, but George Kanellopoulos (Bayside, NY) saw his shot bang off the crossbar.  That would prove to be the Privateers' best scoring chance of the game.

The Bears scored twice early in the second half to increase their lead to 3-0.  Anderson Velasquez found the back of the net in the 47th minute, then assisted on Potsdam's third goal, sending a low cross to Fernando Rosas, who put it home into the lower left in the 53rd minute.

Augusto Lebron (Valley Stream, NY) (1-1-1) made six saves in the losing effort, as Maritime was outshot 17-8.  Potsdam goalkeeper Lucas Schiel (1-0-0) was credited with three saves before giving way to Ian Schwartz.

Maritime (0-0-0 Skyline) begins Skyline Conference play by visiting Yeshiva (2-1-0, 1-1-0 Skyline) at 7 p.m. on Thursday.  It will be the Privateers' only road contest in an eight-game span.
