Maritime Places Five On All-Skyline First Team

THROGGS NECK, NY – Five members of the Skyline Conference champion Maritime College men's lacrosse team have been selected First Team All-Skyline by the league's head coaches.  Junior attackman John Killcommons (Garden City, NY) was honored along with junior midfielder Steven Pinto (Oakdale, NY), senior midfielder Kyle Orton (Lewes, DE) and sophomore defender Joe Kiernan (Northport, NY).  Freshman Michael Monahan (Ronkonkoma, NY), meanwhile, was the Skyline Co-Rookie of the Year as well as the First Team goalkeeper.

Killcommons ranks second on the team in both goals (33) and points (45).  He scored six goals in a game twice this season, including the Skyline Championship Game.  Killcommons, who transferred to Maritime from Wagner, leads the Privateers with five man-up tallies, while also notching a man-down goal.  He's also posted 26 ground balls and 10 caused turnovers.

Pinto also transferred to Maritime this year after previously attending Stony Brook.  He scored multiple goals in each of the Privateers' first five games and currently has 21 tallies, third-most on the team.  Pinto found the back of the net twice in the Skyline Championship Game.

Orton was a major contributor for the Privateers on both the offensive and defensive ends.  He has 20 goals, 49 ground balls and 10 caused turnovers on the season.  The team captain has also gone 22-for-42 on faceoffs.  Orton scored the game-winning overtime goal in the regular season matchup with Farmingdale, then was named MVP of the Skyline Championship Game after tallying a goal, five ground balls and two caused turnovers.

Kiernan, last season's Skyline Rookie of the Year, is a repeat First Team selection.  He leads Maritime with 56 ground balls, and his 31 caused turnovers are second-most in the conference.

Monahan has won nine consecutive decisions and is 9-1 on the season.  He ranks fourth in the league in both goals against average (9.24) and save percentage (.569).  Monahan's 87 goals against are the fewest in the conference.  He has also collected 26 ground balls.

In addition, sophomore defender Kieran Hendry (East Northport, NY) and senior long-stick midfielder Matthew Guercio (Smithtown, NY) were named Second Team All-Skyline. Hendry has started every game this season and ranks second on the team with 20 caused turnovers.  Guercio, meanwhile, has six goals and five assists to go along with 35 ground balls and 10 caused turnovers.

The Skyline All-Sportsmanship Team was also announced on Monday, and senior defender John Moore (Syosset, NY) was recognized for upholding the conference's commitment to sportsmanship and fair play.

Maritime clinched its third straight Skyline championship with a 22-13 victory over Farmingdale on Saturday.  The Privateers (11-7) visit Stevens (12-7) in the first round of the NCAA Tournament at 4 p.m. on Wednesday.
