Privateers Top Merchant Marine For Third Straight Hagedorn Cup

KINGS POINT, NY – The Maritime College men's lacrosse team won at Merchant Marine's Brooks Stadium for the first time since 2008 on Saturday afternoon.  With the 13-6 victory, their fourth straight over the Mariners (3-6, 0-1 Skyline), the Privateers (4-7, 2-0 Skyline) retained the Hagedorn Cup.

It was a low-scoring first quarter, with Merchant Marine getting a goal from Carter Hall and John Killcommons (Garden City, NY) responding for Maritime.  After Parker Reilly (West Islip, NY) gave the Privateers a 2-1 lead early in the second quarter, the Mariners scored two goals 24 seconds apart to go back ahead, 3-2.

Derek Walter (Ronkonkoma, NY) tied the game with a man-up tally at the 4:55 mark, and that goal sparked the Maritime offense.  The Privateers scored six unanswered tallies over the final five minutes of the opening half, including four in the last 90 seconds.  Jason Corvi (Smithtown, NY) found the back of the net with two seconds left to make it an 8-3 game at halftime.

After Maritime extended its advantage to 10-3, Merchant Marine notched back-to-back goals to pull within 10-5 entering the final period.  However, the Privateers outscored the Mariners 3-1 in the fourth quarter to seal the 13-6 win, their third consecutive victory in the Hagedorn Cup series (Maritime also beat Merchant Marine in the 2019 Skyline Championship Game).

Reilly followed up his six-goal performance against Mount St. Vincent by scoring four times.  He also picked up seven ground balls.  Matthew Guercio (Smithtown, NY) finished with two goals and seven ground balls, while Kyle Orton (Lewes, DE) added seven ground balls of his own.  Connor Tomich (Sayville, NY) contributed three points on a goal and two assists.  Goalkeeper Michael Monahan (Ronkonkoma, NY) (2-1) made 12 saves to earn the win.

For Merchant Marine, Hall led the way with two goals.  Dom Mirack collected six ground balls and caused five turnovers, while Jason Aiello tallied five ground balls and three caused turnovers.  Samuel Stephenson (3-6) recorded 13 saves in a losing effort.

Maritime plays its second consecutive Skyline Conference road game on Tuesday night.  The Privateers will visit Manhattanville (2-7, 1-0 Skyline) for a 7 p.m. contest.
