NEWBURGH, NY – After trailing 2-1 midway through the first quarter, the Maritime College women's lacrosse team scored the next 10 goals and had a 14-3 halftime lead at Mount St. Mary on Tuesday night. The Privateers (9-0, 3-0 Skyline) would go on to beat the Knights (6-3, 0-2 Skyline) by a 22-5 count at Kaplan Field, continuing the best start in program history.
Jenna Lesiewicz (Wading River, NY) started the run with her goal at the 4:22 mark of the first quarter, then
Tori Gay (Whiteford, MD) gave Maritime the lead less than a minute later. Gay found the back of the net again with 1:35 left in the period, and the Privateers would add four more in the final minute of the quarter to extend their advantage to 8-2.
Maritime increased its lead to 11-2 before Mount St. Mary's Ashley Giorgi ended the 10-goal rally. However, Lesiewicz won the ensuing draw and took it down for a goal to spark another eight-goal spurt that made it 19-3.
The Privateers held the Knights scoreless in the third quarter, outscoring Mount St. Mary 5-0 in the period. Maritime added three goals in the fourth quarter to close out a 22-5 win, its 10
th straight dating back to last season.
Gay took five shots in the game…and scored on every one of them. She also had six draw controls, three ground balls and two caused turnovers.
Gabrielle Nicolosi (West Islip, NY) had five goals of her own to go along with two assists, while
Avery Jillson Neuwirth (Croton-on-Hudson, NY) finished with two goals and five assists. Lesiewicz scored four times and controlled nine draw, and
Sara Wright (East Islip, NY) recorded three goals and four draw controls.
Kiera Ford (Montgomery, NY) contributed three draw controls, as Maritime held a 22-6 edge in that category. Starting goalkeeper
Liz Pomaro (Farmingville, NY) (9-0) made two saves in the victory.
Megan Shalvey tallied two goals for Mount St. Mary, while Victoria Ward had a goal and an assist. Jackie Lindsay led the Knights with three draw controls. Liz Petrellese (6-3) got the start in net and took the loss. She made five saves.
On Friday night, the Privateers return home for a 6:30 p.m. matchup with Manhattanville (1-7, 0-2 Skyline) at Reinhart Field.
