FARMINGDALE, NY – The Maritime College men's lacrosse team played a back-and-forth game against Farmingdale at Rams Field on Wednesday afternoon. The Rams (8-3, 2-2 Skyline) scored in the final minute of regulation to force overtime, but
Kyle Orton (Lewes, DE) found the back on the first possession of the extra session to give the Privateers (7-7, 5-0 Skyline) a 14-13 victory, their 21
st straight against Skyline opponents.
After the teams traded goals in the first half, with neither side holding a lead of more than two, Maritime scored four times in a three-minute span midway through the third quarter to open up a 12-7 advantage. The Rams responded with three quick goals of their own, though, to pull within 12-10.
Farmingdale's fourth straight tally made it a one-goal game with 11:08 remaining in the fourth quarter.
John Killcommons (Garden City, NY) once again put Maritime up by two, 13-11, with 6:40 to go before Rob Varello scored for the Rams just over a minute later. After the Privateers took a late penalty, Varello put home a man-up goal to tie the game.
Maritime won the overtime faceoff and immediately took timeout. The Privateers set up Orton to take the shot, and he put away the game-winner. It was Maritime's second consecutive one-goal triumph over Farmingdale after the Privateers beat the Rams 13-12 in last season's Skyline Championship Game.
Orton finished with three goals and two assists. He also went 6-for-9 on faceoffs and picked up 10 ground balls.
Steven Pinto (Oakdale, NY) and
Patrick Schnell (Jericho, NY) each scored twice, while
Parker Reilly (West Islip, NY) tallied three points on a goal and two assists. Maritime had a 50-30 edge in ground balls, as
Zander Katsalas (Bayport, NY) and
Michael Monahan (Ronkonkoma, NY) both collected five ground balls. Monahan (5-1) also made nine saves.
Varello led the Rams with five goals. Jake Wandle notched three goals and two assists, while Terrence Haggerty contributed two goals and two assists. Antonio Kaminskey recorded 12 ground balls and goalkeeper Kevin Loonie (8-3) posted 20 saves.
With the victory, Maritime locked up a berth in the Skyline Conference Tournament for the fourth consecutive time. The Privateers will guarantee themselves a home semifinal with a win in either of their final two regular season games. Maritime concludes its road schedule with a 12 p.m. matchup at Purchase (5-6, 0-4 Skyline) on Saturday.
