Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Farmingdale Hands Maritime First Loss of Season

FARMINGDALE, NY – Entering Wednesday afternoon's game, it had been nearly a full calendar year since the Maritime College women's lacrosse team's last loss.  Not since a 16-9 defeat at Farmingdale on April 16, 2021.  The Privateers won 11 straight contests after that loss.  That streak came to an end on Wednesday, when Maritime (10-1, 4-1 Skyline) visited Farmingdale again and the Rams (6-7, 4-1 Skyline) posted 13-12 overtime victory at Rams Field.

Farmingdale took a 12-10 lead with 1:27 left in the fourth quarter, but Sara Wright (East Islip, NY) scored with 26 seconds remaining to pull the Privateers within one.  Maritime won the ensuing draw and earned a free position attempt with eight seconds remaining.  Jenna Lesiewicz (Wading River, NY) put it home to tie the game at 12-12 and force overtime.

In the extra session, Lesiewicz had a shot hit the post and Farmingdale's Stacy Papantoniou picked up the ground ball.  The Rams took it down and, with 45 seconds remaining, Anna Zabrowska connected with Jasmin Brown for the game-winner, officially snapping Maritime's winning streak.

Lesiewicz paced the Privateers with four goals, and she added an assist.  She also recorded 10 draw controls, four ground balls and three caused turnovers.  Avery Jillson Neuwirth (Croton-on-Hudson, NY) had four points on two goals and two assists, while Wright contributed two goals and five draw controls.  Liz Pomaro (Farmingville, NY) started in goal and made one save before being relieved by Tori Koenig (Roxbury, NJ) (0-1), who took the loss.  Koenig was credited with four saves.

It was 4-1 Farmingdale after the first quarter, but the Privateers rallied back with five unanswered goals in the second period.  After the Rams regained the lead, 7-6, Kiera Ford (Montgomery, NY) and Mackenzie Fabiani (Bayport, NY) scored to put Maritime back in front, 8-7.  Farmingdale evened the score at 8-8 entering the fourth quarter, and each team notched four goals in the final period.

For the Rams, Brown led the way with five goals to go along with four draw controls and three ground balls.  Megan Diamond tallied six points on three goals and three assists, while Nicole Pontecorvo scored three times.  Zabrowska finished with five ground balls and six caused turnovers, and Adrianna Schiavone picked up five ground balls of her own.  Farmingdale goalkeeper Ronnie Reilly (6-7) recorded 13 saves in the winning effort.

The Privateers return to Reinhart Field for their final home game of the season on Friday night.  Maritime will honor its three seniors—Wright, Katherine Buser (Babylon, NY) and Victoria Machado (North Babylon, NY)—prior to the 6 p.m. contest against Purchase (1-5, 0-2 Skyline).
