THROGGS NECK, NY – After suffering its first loss of the season on Wednesday afternoon, the Maritime College women's lacrosse team rebounded rather nicely on Friday. The Privateers (11-1, 5-1 Skyline) honored seniors
Katherine Buser (Babylon, NY),
Victoria Machado (North Babylon, NY) and
Sara Wright (East Islip, NY) prior to their final regular season contest at Reinhart Field before routing Purchase (1-6, 0-3 Skyline) by a 23-4 count. Maritime finishes the regular season with a perfect 7-0 home record.
Tori Gay (Whiteford, MD) scored just 19 seconds into the game, and the Privateers held an 8-3 advantage at the end of the first quarter. In the second quarter, it took only 11 seconds for
Jenna Lesiewicz (Wading River, NY) to find the back of the net, as Maritime outscored Purchase 8-0 in the period to extend its advantage to 16-3 at the break.
Purchase's Madison Buttice converted a free position attempt midway through the third quarter before
Gabrielle Nicolosi (West Islip, NY) made it 17-4 in favor of the Privateers.
Mary Cirelli (Oreland, PA) then notched the first two goals of her collegiate career to increase Maritime's lead to 19-4. With the Privateers in front 21-4, Buser, a career defender, moved to the offensive end and put two shots home, one of which was a free position goal with 1:30 left that capped the scoring in the 23-4 victory.
In addition to scoring twice, Buser had three ground balls and three caused turnovers. Wright, meanwhile, recorded five goals and an assist to go along with two ground balls and four draw controls. Nicolosi tallied six points of her own with three goals and three assists, and she also collected four ground balls.
Gay finished with four goals and an assist while also controlling four draws. Lesiewicz posted 10 draw controls for the second consecutive game, and she added three goals, two assists and three ground balls.
Kiera Ford (Montgomery, NY) tied for the team lead with four ground balls. She contributed four draw controls, one goal and two assists, as well.
Tori Koenig (Roxbury, NJ) (1-1) made her first start in net and registered three saves.
All four of Purchase's goals were scored by Buttice, who also paced the Panthers with four draw controls. Katie Borger had three draw controls, while Sigrid Cassell led Purchase with three ground balls. Goalkeeper Cassandra Schmoger (1-6) was credited with 10 saves in the losing effort.
While this was Maritime's final regular season home game, it won't be the final time the Privateers play on Reinhart Field in 2022. Maritime has clinched a home game in the Skyline Conference Tournament, with the date, time and opponent to be determined. The Privateers' regular season finale is a 1 p.m. visit to Merchant Marine (6-2, 2-0 Skyline) next Saturday, April 23.
