Wright Scores 100th Goal In Win Over St. Joseph’s LI

THROGGS NECK, NY – Sara Wright (East Islip, NY) scored her 100th goal as a member of the Maritime College women's lacrosse team on Friday night.  It was her 102nd career goal that proved to be the difference, however, as she netted the game-winner with 5:15 left in the Privateers' (8-0, 2-0 Skyline) 8-7 victory over St. Joseph's LI (1-4, 0-1 Skyline) at Reinhart Field.

Wright's milestone tally came six minutes into the game and gave Maritime a 1-0 lead.  The Privateers extended their advantage to 3-0 before the Golden Eagles' Melissa Newman scored with two seconds left in the opening period.  After Wright made it 4-1 early in the second quarter, St. Joseph's LI notched a pair of goals to cut its deficit to one, 4-3, at halftime.

Jenna Lesiewicz (Wading River, NY) and Gabrielle Nicolosi (West Islip, NY) scored to push the lead back to three, 6-3, before the Golden Eagles' Jamie Trowbridge responded with two goals in less than a minute to again pull St. Joseph's LI within one, 6-5.  It was a 7-6 game entering the fourth quarter, and Wright completed a hat trick to give Maritime a two-goal lead, 8-6.  Hannah King scored for the Golden Eagles less than two minutes later, however, again making it a one-score margin, 8-7.

Maritime won the ensuing draw, but Lesiewicz's shot was saved by St. Joseph's LI goalkeeper Jillian Hummel.  The Privateers forced a turnover with 1:31 left and were able to use the entire 90-second shot clock to hold on for their second one-goal home win over the Golden Eagles in as many years.

The Privateers outshot the Golden Eagles 35-19, including a 28-9 edge in shots on goal, but Hummel (0-4) was spectacular in net for St. Joseph's LI, making 20 saves.  She also picked up four ground balls.  Trowbridge collected four ground balls of her own to go along with three goals.  Emily O'Mara, meanwhile, finished with two goals, an assist and six draw controls.

In addition to recording a hat trick, Wright tallied four ground balls and three draw controls.  Lesiewicz had two goals and an assist to go along with four ground balls and five draw controls.  Tori Gay (Whiteford, MD) led Maritime with five ground balls while adding a goal, while Kathryn Sanford (Floral Park, NY) caused four St. Joseph's LI turnovers.  Liz Pomaro (Farmingville, NY) (8-0) was credited with two saves in the win.

Up next, the Privateers travel to Mount St. Mary (6-2, 0-1 Skyline) for a 7 p.m. matchup on Tuesday night.
