THROGGS NECK, NY – After a slow start, the Maritime College women's lacrosse team (6-0) used a seven-goal third quarter to pull away en route to a 14-7 victory over Ramapo (1-5) at Reinhart Field on Friday night. The win was Maritime's sixth straight to begin the season, marking the best start in program history.
Ramapo scored the first goal of the game before
Gabrielle Nicolosi (West Islip, NY) netted a pair of tallies to give the Privateers a 2-1 lead. After the Roadrunners tied it at 2-2,
Sara Wright (East Islip, NY) found the back of the net twice to give Maritime a two-goal edge. The Privateers held a 5-3 advantage at halftime.
Just 87 seconds into the second half,
Jenna Lesiewicz (Wading River, NY) notched the first of six straight Maritime goals that extended the Privateers' cushion to 11-3. Ramapo pulled within six at 12-6 midway through the fourth quarter, but
Tori Gay (Whiteford, MD) and Wright responded with back-to-back tallies that pushed the margin back to eight, 14-6. Ramapo's Esme Espinosa capped the scoring in the 14-7 Maritime win.
Wright and Nicolosi had four goals apiece to pace the Privateers. Wright also tallied five draw controls, while Nicolosi contributed two assists and two ground balls. Gay finished with two goals, three ground balls and eight draw controls, as Maritime held a 19-6 edge in that category.
Lesiewicz registered six draw controls and three ground balls, and
Giavonna DiToma (North Syracuse, NY) collected three ground balls of her own.
Avery Jillson Neuwirth (Croton-on-Hudson, NY) added two goals, while
Mackenzie Fabiani (Bayport, NY) handed out four assists.
Liz Pomaro (Farmingville, NY) (6-0) made four saves in the winning effort.
For the Roadrunners, Kelly Griffin led the way with three goals, three ground balls and three draw controls. Leah Durkin, meanwhile, caused three turnovers to go along with a pair of ground balls. Ramapo goalkeeper Alyssa Curto (1-5) was credited with nine saves.
The Privateers conclude non-conference play on Tuesday afternoon, when they visit Mitchell (1-4) at 3 p.m.
