GALLOWAY, NJ – On Saturday afternoon, the Maritime College men's lacrosse team continued its five-game road trip with a visit to Stockton. The Privateers (2-5) had a 3-2 lead midway through the first quarter, but the Ospreys (3-2) eventually pulled away for a 24-12 victory at G. Larry James Stadium.
After
John Killcommons (Garden City, NY) scored the first goal of the game, Dante Poli found the back of the net twice to put Stockton in front 2-1. Maritime responded, however, with tallies from
Kyle Orton (Lewes, DE) and
William Prokesch (Sayville, NY) to go ahead 3-2 with 7:06 remaining in the first quarter. The Ospreys ended the period on a 5-0 run, though, to open up a 7-3 advantage.
Stockton extended the margin to 11-3 before Orton scored his second goal of the game with 10:06 left until halftime. He competed a hat trick with seven seconds remaining in the first half, cutting the Privateers' deficit to 16-5 at the break.
That goal started a 7-1 Maritime spurt, and the Privateers pulled within 17-11 on a Killcommons tally 47 seconds into the fourth quarter. It would get no closer, though, as Stockton outscored Maritime 7-1 the rest of the way to finish off a 24-12 win.
Orton registered four points on three goals and an assist. Killcommons finished with two goals and an assist, while
Connor Tomich (Sayville, NY) also had two goals.
Joe Kiernan (Northport, NY),
Zander Katsalas (Bayport, NY) and
Michael Monahan (Ronkonkoma, NY) paced the Privateers with four ground balls apiece. Monahan added 11 saves. Starting goalkeeper
Jack Daresta (Massapequa, NY) (2-5) made 12 saves and took the loss.
For Stockton, Poli tallied 11 points on six goals and five assists. Luc Swedlund also scored six times to go along with four ground balls. Tyler Horvath scooped up 11 ground balls, as the Ospreys held a 42-28 edge in that category. Eric Lindskog (3-2) stopped nine Maritime shots.
Maritime continues its road swing with a 7 p.m. visit to Kean (3-1) on Wednesday night. The Cougars also played in the NCAA Tournament last season, falling at Stevenson in the first round.
