THROGGS NECK, NY – One day after Maritime College pitchers
Shane Sullivan (Stewart Manor, NY) and
Niko Concha (Ballston Spa, NY) shut down John Jay, the Privateers' other two weekend starters—
Frank Santeramo (Garden City, NY) and
Matthew Demme (Carmel, NY) got their turn on Sunday against Baruch. Santeramo allowed just one unearned run in the first game, a 2-1 Maritime victory, while Demme tossed a one-hit shutout in game two, as the Privateers (8-3) beat the Bearcats (0-4) by a 13-0 count at Reinhart Baseball Field.
All four Maritime starters pitched a complete game this weekend, and the Privateers outscored their opponents 34-2 in the two sweeps. The quartet held John Jay and Baruch to just eight
hits in the four games
.
Game one on Sunday was an old-fashioned pitcher's duel between Santeramo and Baruch's Nathaniel Demchak. Neither side had a hit until the top of the fourth, when Robert Wakely broke up Santeramo's no-hitter with a leadoff double down the left field line. The next batter, Natanael Castillo dropped down a bunt and Santeramo tried to get the lead runner at third. His throw went into left field, however, allowing Wakely to score the game's first run.
Demchak, meanwhile, was perfect until issuing a two-out walk to
Ryan Rockhill (Eastchester, NY) in the bottom of the fifth.
Jaden Shea (Severn, MD) followed with a single to right center, moving Rockhill to third. However, the runners were left stranded when
Jonathan Racanello (New Rochelle, NY) struck out to end the inning.
Maritime was able to push the tying run across in the sixth.
Adam Mosca (Massapequa Park, NY) drew a leadoff walk, moved to second on
Nick Pinggera's (Kings Park, NY) sacrifice bunt and advanced to third on a hit-and-run strikeout.
Freddy Forgione (Ronkonkoma, NY) then ripped a single to left, bringing Mosca home with the tying run.
After Santeramo retired the Bearcats in order in the top of the seventh, Rockhill and Shea started the bottom half of the inning with back-to-back walks. Racanello dropped a sacrifice bunt down the first base line, but the throw was wild, allowing Rockhill to score the game-winning run. It was Maritime's second walk-off victory of the season.
Santeramo (2-0) gave up one unearned run and three hits while striking out seven. He didn't issue a walk in the win. Demchak, meanwhile, took a no-decision after yielding one run two hits with eight strikeouts and three walks in six innings of work. Nicholas Rowe (0-1) pitched the seventh inning for Baruch and was charged with the loss.
In game two, Maritime jumped out early, scoring three runs in the bottom of the second. Rockhill walked leading off the inning, then sole second before coming across on Shea's single to left. Shea scored on an
Anthony Madigan (Greenlawn, NY) groundout, and
Travis Zurita (Ozone Park, NY) made it 3-0 with an RBI single to center.
The Privateers added three more in the third and two in the fourth. Forgione was at the heart of both rallies, crushing a leadoff homer in the third and delivering a two-run single in the fourth.
That was more than enough offense for Demme, but Maritime still wasn't done. The Privateers put up a five-spot in the bottom of the sixth to increase their advantage to 13-0.
Logan Martinson (Sumner, WA) singled home one, while three runs scored on a bases-loaded single by Madigan.
Danny Green's (Belle Harbor, NY) RBI infield single capped the scoring.
Demme, who only threw five pitches in the sixth, went back out for the top of the seventh and promptly got three groundouts to finish off his first career shutout. He retired the final seven batters he faced after the only hit he allowed, a two-out single by Zachary Rosenfeld in the fifth. Demme (2-1) had four strikeouts and walked two.
Offensively, Maritime pounded out 18 hits. Forgione and Zurita both finished 3-for-3, while Shea was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Rockhill scored twice, and Green went 2-for-2 with a run and an RBI after entering as a pinch runner. Madigan, meanwhile, collected three RBIs as part of his 1-for-4 effort.
Baruch starting pitcher David Sierra Perez (0-1) lasted 2.1 innings and took the loss. He surrendered six runs on eight hits, struck out two and walked one. Rowe gave up two runs and recorded three strikeouts over 2.2 innings, while William Corda pitched one inning for the Bearcats.
Up next for the Privateers is a 3:30 p.m. visit to FDU-Florham (10-3) on Tuesday. It will be Maritime's final game before the start of Skyline Conference play next weekend.
