MADISON, NJ – After sweeping home doubleheaders against John Jay and Baruch over the weekend, the Maritime College baseball team returned to action on Tuesday with a single game at FDU-Florham. The Privateers (8-4) saw their winning streak come to an end, however, as the Devils (11-3) earned a 5-3 victory at Naimoli Ballpark.
It was a 0-0 game until the bottom of the fourth, when FDU-Florham put up a four-spot. The Devils loaded the bases before two runs scored on an error. After FDU-Florham loaded the bases again, Tyrus Chippendale ripped a two-run single that gave the Devils a 4-0 lead.
Maritime pulled within 4-2 in the top of the sixth.
Logan Martinson (Sumner, WA) tripled leading off the inning, then scored on
Adam Mosca's (Massapequa Park, NY) sacrifice fly.
Nick Pinggera (Kings Park, NY) and
Travis Zurita (Ozone Park, NY) followed with back-to-back singles before
Freddy Forgione (Ronkonkoma, NY) walked to load the bases. With two down,
Jake Bernardi (Bronx, NY) worked a bases-loaded walk to bring Pinggera home.
FDU-Florham got one run back in the bottom of the sixth, but the Privateers rallied again in the eighth. After Forgione reached on an error,
Anthony Madigan (Greenlawn, NY) doubled to cut FDU-Florham's lead to 5-3. Madigan would be left stranded at second, though, and Maritime managed just a two-out single in the ninth, as FDU-Florham held on for the win.
Six different Privateers had a hit in the game, including Martinson's triple and the doubles by Forgione and Madigan.
Haydn Strycharz (Pittstown, NJ) (0-1) got the start on the mound for the Privateers and lasted 3.1 innings. He allowed four runs (three earned) on seven hits, walked two and struck out one. Relievers
William Giuliani (Levittown, NY),
Blaise Delise (Queens, NY)
James Paczkowski (Oceanside, NY) and
Eric Wenig (Simi Valley, CA) combined to give up just one run and three hits over 4.2 innings.
Chippendale, DJ Gonnelli and Dylan Hode all went 2-for-4 for the Devils. Matt Nodoro, meanwhile, scored two runs. FDU-Florham starter Christian Capuano retired all nine batters he faced in three innings, including five strikeouts. Michael Dunay (2-1) earned the win after yielding two runs on four hits and a walk in 2.1 innings. Colby Craig picked up his fifth save after pitching the ninth and surrendering one hit.
This was Maritime's final contest before the start of Skyline Conference play. The Privateers begin their league schedule with a 12 p.m. doubleheader at Farmingdale (5-6, 0-0 Skyline) on Saturday.
