Privateers Overpower John Jay In Doubleheader Sweep

THROGGS NECK, NY – Pitchers Shane Sullivan (Stewart Manor, NY) and Niko Concha (Ballston Spa, NY) of the Maritime College baseball team were simply dominant in the Privateers' home-opening doubleheader against John Jay on Saturday.  Each tossed a complete game two-hitter, as Maritime (6-3) swept the twinbill at Reinhart Baseball Field.  The Privateers got plenty of offense, too, taking the opener 4-1 before pounding out 15 hits in game two, a 15-0 victory over the Bloodhounds (0-13).

In game one, Sullivan had a no-hitter going until a clean single by Juan Maldonado with one out in the fourth.  He was one pitch away from a one-hit shutout when Anthony Agosta belted a solo home run in the top of the seventh.  It was the first run Sullivan (2-0) has allowed in 16 innings this season.  He struck out the next batter, his 11th of the game, to close out the 4-1 win.

The Privateers gave Sullivan all the offense he needed in the bottom of the first.  After back-to-back singles by Nick Pinggera (Kings Park, NY) and Travis Zurita (Ozone Park, NY), Freddy Forgione (Ronkonkoma, NY) lifted a sacrifice fly to center that put Maritime ahead 1-0.  Pinggera walked leading off the third and came around to score his second run of the game on Jake Bernardi's (Bronx, NY) RBI fielder's choice.

Bernardi started a two-run rally in the sixth when he bunted the first pitch down the third base line for a single.  Jaden Shea (Severn, MD) followed with a bunt single of his own before Adam Mosca (Massapequa Park, NY) was hit by a pitch to load the bases.  After Bernardi came across on a bases loaded walk, Pinggera ripped an RBI single to put Maritime up 4-0.

Pinggera finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI.  Jonathan Racanello (New  Rochelle, NY), meanwhile, reached base all three times, going 2-for-2 with a walk and an RBI.

Preston Reitz (0-3) went five innings on the mound for John Jay.  He allowed two runs on five hits, struck out four and walked two.  Fernando Sladky surrendered two runs on three hits and a walk in one inning of work.

After Concha quickly retired the Bloohounds in the top of the first in game two, Bernardi crushed a grand slam in the bottom half of the inning.  The Privateers then put up a five-spot in the bottom of the third.  Forgione led off the inning with a homer to left, then Ryan Rockhill (Eastchester, NY) followed with a double to right.  Bernardi was up next, and he delivered an RBI single.  Mosca doubled home a run two batters later, while Pinggera capped the rally with an RBI single.

Maritime added six more runs in the bottom of the fifth.  Chris Felder (Wallingford, PA) knocked in a run on a groundout before Nate Revere (Seaford, NY) plated two on a triple to left.  Shea doubled home a run and later scored on an RBI single by Xavier Cruz (Franklin Square, NY).

That was more than enough offense for Concha, who was simply brilliant.  The only two hits he gave up were a leadoff single in the third and a two-out double in the fifth.  Concha (2-0) struck out 14 and walked only one in the shutout.

Ten different Privateers had at least one hit in the game, as Maritime pounded out 15 as a team.  Shea went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI, while Bernardi was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and five RBIs, including his grand slam.  Forgione finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI, and Pinggera added a pair of hits in game two, giving him four in the doubleheder.

Ethan Simaan and Ismael Tatis had John Jay's hits in the contest.  Maldonado (0-4) started on the mound and lasted into the third.  He surrendered nine runs (eight earned) on eight hits with two strikeouts and a walk.  Angel Bayron yielded four runs in 2.1 innings of relief, while Robert Burgos tossed the final 1.2 innings and was charged with two runs (one earned).

On Sunday, Maritime welcomes Baruch (0-2) to Reinhart Baseball Field for a 12 p.m. doubleheader.
