Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Privateers Edged By Geneseo, 8-7

THROGGS NECK, NY – The Maritime College men's lacrosse team concluded its season-opening five-game homestand by welcoming Geneseo to Reinhart Field on Sunday afternoon.  The Privateers (2-3) held a 7-6 lead after three quarters, but the Knights (1-3) scored twice in the final period to earn a come-from-behind 8-7 victory.

Maritime jumped out to a 3-0 lead after 10 minutes, getting goals from Patrick Schnell (Jericho, NY) and Connor Tomich (Sayville, NY), as well as a man-up tally by leading scorer Steven Pinto (Oakdale, NY).  Geneseo cut the Privateers' advantage to 3-1 late in the first quarter before Kyle Orton (Lewes, DE) again made it a three-goal game with his unassisted marker early in the second quarter.

It was 5-4 in favor of the Privateers at the break, but Orton scored his second unassisted tally of the game early in the third to restore the two-goal margin, 6-4.  After the teams traded goals, Geneseo's Kevin Cook found the back of the net with 3:10 left in the third quarter to again bring the Knights within one at 7-6.  Sean Byrne then tied the game with his goal at the 11:09 mark in the fourth quarter.  Byrne scored again with 5:28 to go to give Geneseo its first lead of the game, 8-7.

Looking for a tying goal, the Privateers took a timeout with 2:18 remaining in the contest.  Orton's shot was saved, but Maritime retained possession when the shot went out of bounds.  Connor Buschle's (Bellport, NY) attempt was also stopped by Geneseo goalkeeper Mark Pav, who picked up the ground ball with 1:13 left, allowing the Knights to successfully run out the clock and preserve the victory.

Orton tallied a season-high three points on two goals and an assist, while Pinto scored twice.  Sean Foley (Long Beach, NY) also had a multi-point effort with a goal and an assist.  Joe Kiernan (Northport, NY) picked up a team-best five ground balls.  Jack Daresta (Massapequa, NY) (2-3) was strong once again between the pipes, posting 10 saves in a losing effort.

For the Knights, Byrne and Cook each recorded a hat trick.  In addition to picking up four ground balls, Pav (1-3) was credited with 14 saves, including four in the fourth quarter.

After playing five consecutive home games to begin the season, the Privateers will now hit the road for five straight.  Maritime begins the stretch with a 6 p.m. visit to Coast Guard (2-2) on Wednesday.
