Privateers Can't Overcome Early Deficit at Sarah Lawrence

BRONXVILLE, NY – After playing four games in nine days, the Maritime College men's basketball team had five days off before Monday night's contest at Sarah Lawrence.  Despite being well-rested, the Privateers (3-16, 0-12 Skyline) were unable to climb out of an early hole in a 76-65 loss to the Gryphons (7-11, 5-6 Skyline) at the Campbell Sports Center.

Maritime made its first three shots and held an 8-4 lead after Nick Ovanessian's (Bayside, NY) three-pointer with 17:39 remaining in the first half.  A Jaylin Gray (Brooklyn, NY) layup made it 10-6 in favor of the Privateers before Sarah Lawrence went on a 28-6 run to go ahead, 34-16.  Maritime cut its deficit to 14 points, 38-24, at the break.

Sarah Lawrence opened up its biggest advantage of the night, a 55-34 edge, with 13:29 left.  The Privateers rallied back, however.  A Gray jumper at the 6:30 mark brought Maritime within eight at 60-52.  After the Gryphons pushed the margin back to 12 at 67-55, a pair of Sean Flynn (Flushing, NY) free throws and a Mike Regan (Dix Hills, NY) trey made it a seven-point game, 67-60, with 4:44 to go.

It was still a seven-point game, 72-65, after Robbie Mitchell (Richmond, NY) hit two foul shots at the 2:04 mark.  Sarah Lawrence made four free throws down the stretch, however, to close out the 76-65 win, its fourth straight over the Privateers.

Ryan Donovan (North Salem, NY) led Maritime with 16 points and eight rebounds.  He also distributed four assists.  Mitchell finished with 15 points and five boards off the bench, while Gray contributed nine points and four assists.  Flynn added eight points and eight rebounds for the Privateers, who shot a combined 33.3 percent (24-of-72) from the floor.  Maritime was 8-for-34 (23.5 percent) from long range and 9-for-13 (69.2 percent) at the charity stripe.

For the Gryphons, Justin Bailey had a double-double with 12 points and 15 rebounds.  Lucas Murray had eight boards to go along with a game-high 18 points, and Joshua Capellan recorded 15 points and six rebounds off the bench.  Xiyuan Zhang contributed 13 points, while Amos Grey and Liam Barry handed out five assists apiece.  Sarah Lawrence shot 48.1 percent (26-of-54) from the field, 53.8 percent (7-of-13) from three-point land, and 70.8 percent (17-of-24) at the foul line.  The Gryphons also outrebounded Maritime 46-37.

The Privateers return to action on Wednesday with a 7 p.m. matchup at Manhattanville (10-7, 7-3 Skyline).  The Valiants earned a 68-51 win at Riesenberg Gymnasium on Dec. 4 in Maritime's Skyline opener.
