PURCHASE, NY – The Maritime College men's basketball team jumped out to a nine-point lead midway through the first half at Manhattanville on Wednesday night. The Privateers (3-17, 0-13 Skyline) were unable to hold on, however, as the Valiants (11-7, 8-3 Skyline) notched a 66-57 victory at Kennedy Gymnasium.
Maritime got off to a great start, making its first four field goal attempts to take an early 11-5 cushion. The Privateers extended that margin to eight points when
Jaylin Gray's (Brooklyn, NY) layup made it 17-9 at the 9:43 mark. Maritime still held a seven-point edge, 25-18, with 4:17 remaining until halftime, but Manhattanville ended the period on a 16-2 run to take a 34-27 advantage into the locker room.
After the Valiants increased their lead to a game-high 13 points at 44-31 with 14:40 left, Maritime rallied to pull within six, 53-47. However, Manhattanville responded with a 9-2 run to bring the margin back to 13 points, 62-49. The Valiants won by 66-57 count, completing a season sweep of the Privateers.
Ryan Donovan (North Salem, NY) had a game-high 20 points to go along with seven rebounds. Gray contributed 14 points, while
Mike Regan (Dix Hills, NY) registered nine points.
Nick Ovanessian (Bayside, NY) added eight rebounds and four assists for the Privateers, who shot a combined 39.3 percent (22-of-56) from the field. Maritime was 4-for-18 (22.2 percent) from long range and 9-for-14 (64.3 percent) at the charity stripe.
For Manhattanville, Jackson Leech led the way with 12 points, and he also grabbed seven rebounds. Tommy Lotito pulled down a team-best eight boards to go along with six assists, while Chris Brown tallied nine points and three blocks. The Valiants shot 38.6 percent (27-of-70) from the floor and outrebounded the Privateers 48-38. Manhattanville went 6-for-21 (28.6 percent) from downtown and 6-for-14 (42.9 percent) at the free throw line.
On Saturday, the Privateers conclude their home schedule with a 1 p.m. matchup against Merchant Marine (12-8, 9-4 Skyline). Prior to the game, Maritime will honor its five graduating seniors—
