Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Donovan, Gray Lead Maritime to OT Win at Purchase

PURCHASE, NY – Ryan Donovan (New Carmel, NY) and Jaylin Gray (Brooklyn, NY) combined for 60 points on Monday night, as the Maritime College men's basketball team (4-18, 1-14 Skyline) snapped its losing streak with a 97-90 overtime victory over host Purchase (5-17, 5-10 Skyline) at the Purchase College Athletic Center.  The 97 points were Maritime's most in a game since Dec. 4, 2007, when the Privateers defeated Bard 101-77.

Donovan finished with 31 points to go along with five rebounds and four assists.  Gray, meanwhile, had 29 points and went a perfect 11-for-11 at the free throw line.  Mike Regan (Dix Hills, NY) added 20 points and eight boards, and Nick Ovanessian (Bayside, NY) tallied 11 points.  Sean Flynn (Flushing, NY) grabbed eight rebounds while also recording three blocks.  The Privateers shot season-highs of 53.4 percent (31-of-58) from the floor, 50 percent (6-of-12) from three-point range, and 82.9 percent (29-of-35) at the charity stripe.

After Purchase scored seven of the first nine points, Maritime rallied to take a 14-12 lead on Donovan's trey with 12:29 left in the first half.  The Privateers eventually extended their advantage to six points at 20-14 before the Panthers rallied back within one at 21-20.  However, Maritime responded with seven straight points to push the margin to eight, 28-20.  The lead reached nine points at 37-28 on Ovanessian's layup with 1:38 remaining until halftime, and the Privateers held a 39-34 edge at the break.

Maritime still led by eight, 58-50, at the 12:40 mark of the second half until Purchase went on a 14-8 run to trim its deficit to 66-64.  The Privateers pushed the margin back to six points, 70-64, but the Panthers responded with a 14-4 spurt to take a 79-75 lead with 56 seconds left.  However, Gray hit a layup on the next Maritime possession to make it a two-point game, then, after a Flynn rebound, was fouled and hit both free throws to tie it at 79-79.

Purchase had two chances at a game-winning layup as time expired, but both attempts were off the mark and the contest went into overtime.  And the extra period was all Maritime.  Donovan had 12 points in overtime, including a trey that put the Privateers ahead for good.  Maritime outscored Purchase 18-11 in the extra session, and went 8-for-9 at the line to ice the 97-90 triumph.

For Purchase, Eric Block and Matthew Phillips led the way with 23 points apiece.  Phillips also pulled down 13 rebounds to complete a double-double.  Malcolm Hansford-Whyte had a double-double of his own with 15 points and 10 boards, while Jordan Knochen collected 10 points.  The Panthers shot 40.7 percent (33-of-81) from the field and outrebounded the Privateers 45-33.  Purchase was 9-for-22 (40.9 percent) from downtown and 15-for-18 (83.3 percent) at the foul line.

The win, Maritime's first conference victory of the season, also snapped a 13-game road losing streak.  The Privateers' last road win was an 85-68 triumph at St. Joseph's Brooklyn on Jan. 30, 2020.

On Saturday, the Privateers will look to make it two in a row when they conclude the season with a 3 p.m. contest at Mount St. Mary (6-15, 4-9 Skyline).  The Knights earned a 63-56 win when the sides met at Riesenberg Gymnasium on Jan. 12.
