NEWBURGH, NY – On Saturday afternoon, the Maritime College men's basketball team concluded its 2021-22 season with a visit to Mount St. Mary. Looking to finish the year with two straight victories after Tuesday night's win at Purchase, the Privateers (4-19, 1-15 Skyline) instead fell to the Knights (7-17, 5-11 Skyline) by a 71-62 count at the Kaplan Recreation Center.
Maritime scored the first basket of the game, but Mount St. Mary responded with back-to-back threes. After the Knights opened up a 15-7 advantage, the Privateers went on a 6-0 run to pull within two, 15-13. Mount St. Mary pushed the margin back to nine, 24-15, midway through the first half before Maritime rallied to get within three, 27-24. It was still a three-point game late in the half when Mount St. Mary's Paul Seinke was fouled on a layup and hit the free throw to increase the gap to six, 37-31, at the break.
After Mount St. Mary extended its advantage to 10 points at 48-38 with 14:40 remaining, the Privateers went on a 9-0 rally to get within one, 48-47. However, the Knights countered with an 18-7 spurt to build their largest cushion of the day, 66-54, with 3:35 left. The final margin was nine points, 71-62, as Mount St. Mary completed the season sweep of Maritime.
Ryan Donovan (New Carmel, NY) paced the Privateers with 18 points and seven rebounds.
Jaylin Gray (Brooklyn, NY), playing his final game in a Maritime uniform, finished with 14 points while adding three steals.
Sean Flynn (Flushing, NY) contributed eight points off the bench, while
Mike Regan (Dix Hills, NY) tallied eight points, five rebounds and four assists.
Nick Ovanessian (Bayside, NY) also had four assists for the Privateers, who shot 49 percent (25-of-51) from the field. However, Maritime was just 3-for-15 (20 percent) from long range and 9-for-25 (36 percent) at the free throw line.
For the Knights, Sienke and Nick Lucas led the way with 16 points apiece. Jayden Figueroa posted 13 points and seven rebounds, while Connor Cyran notched 11 points and five boards. Chris Yearwood added four assists. Mount St. Mary shot 41.8 percent (23-of-55) from the floor, 40.6 percent (13-of-32) from three-point land, and 85.7 percent (12-of-14) at the charity stripe.
