WAYNE, NJ – The Maritime College men's swimming & diving team went into the final event of Tuesday night's dual meet at William Paterson with a four-point lead. However, the Pioneers won the 200 yard freestyle relay to earn a 103-100 victory over the Privateers at Wightman Pool. On the women's side, William Paterson topped Maritime by a 102-79 score.
Will Kim (Westbury, NY) (1:07.32) and
Griffin Goldleaf (New Paltz, NY) (1:13.56) went 1-2 in the 100 yard breaststroke to give Maritime the lead heading into the final relay. Kim also took first in the 100 yard butterfly (56.45) and swam the third leg on the victorious 200 yard medley relay squad.
Nolan Lovegrove (Darien, CT),
Stephen Roe (La Grange, IL) and
Brian Reilly (Sayville, NY) were the other members of the medley relay, which posted a time of 1:51.70.
Reilly also had a pair of second-place finishes in the 100 yard freestyle (55.03) and the 200 yard freestyle (2:06.13), while Roe was second behind Kim in the 100 butterfly (58.25). Lovegrove, meanwhile, won the 500 yard freestyle (5:19.61) and finished second in the 100 yard backstroke (1:05.56).
Sean Corrigan (Warwick, NY) (25.75) and
Malachi Melli (Bridgewater, NJ) (26.31) grabbed second and third in the 50 yard freestyle, and Melli added a second-place showing in the 1000 yard freestyle (12:17.54). In addition to placing second in the 100 breaststroke, Goldleaf was second in the 200 yard individual medley (2:24.20).
Maritime also had a 1-2 result in the women's 100 breaststroke, with
Lauren Barriteau (Laurelton, NY) notching a time of 1:21.68 and
Maeve Lavery (Bronx, NY) finishing in 1:25.01.
Marilyn Peterson (Whitney Point, NY) earned the victory in the 1000 freestyle (7:22.53) to go along with second-place points in the 100 freestyle (1:11.59). She also anchored the Privateers to victory in the 200 freestyle relay (2:20.51), where she was joined by
Kirsten Argueta (Englewood, NJ),
Lauren Clary (Bethlehem, GA) and
Isabelle Gautier (Pascagoula, MS).
Mary Cirelli (Oreland, PA) added two second-place efforts of her own in the 200 freestyle (2:22.64) and the 200 individual medley (2:37.86).
Jessica Magee (Smithtown, NY), meanwhile, broke the 200-point barrier in winning the 1-meter diving event. She tallied 205.30 points over her six dives.
This was the beginning of a busy week for the Privateers. Maritime will host a diving-only intersquad meet on Wednesday at 6 p.m. at the Riesenberg Aquatics Center, then resumes its dual meet schedule by visiting Lehman at 6 p.m. on Friday.
