NEW LONDON, CT – The Maritime College men's basketball team hit the road for the first time this season on Saturday afternoon, traveling to Mitchell. The Privateers (2-1) had a nine-point lead at the break, but were unable to hold on, as the Mariners (1-1) handed Maritime its first loss of the year, 78-65, at the Yarnall Athletic Center.
Mitchell held a six-point lead, 19-13, midway through the first half when
Robbie Mitchell (Richmond, NY) drained a three to start a 13-0 Maritime run that put the Privateers in front, 25-19. After the Mariners got back within three at 26-23, Maritime rattled off nine of the next 10 points to make it an 11-point game, 35-24, with 3:33 remaining in the first half. The Privateers' advantage was nine, 41-32, at halftime.
After Maritime opened up its largest lead of the game on
Tyler Anderson's (Smithtown, NY) trey that made it 48-34, Mitchell went on an 11-0 run to trim its deficit to three, 48-45. The Privateers pushed the margin back to seven points at 53-46, but the Mariners scored the next 13 points to pull ahead. Mitchell eventually built a 16-point cushion at 71-55 before Maritime scored seven straight points to cut the lead to nine, 71-62. The Privateers would get no closer, however, as Mitchell responded with seven points of its own.
Chris Zaveckas (Merrick, NY) then sank a late three-pointer to close out the scoring, as Mitchell earned a 78-65 victory.
Theo Noble (Bronx, NY) had 14 points to pace the Privateers. Anderson finished with 11 points, while
Amadou Kouyate (Harlem, NY) contributed 11 points off the bench.
Ryan Donovan (North Salem, NY) and Mitchell recorded nine points apiece, and
Aleksandar Begovic (Kotor, Montenegro) pulled down a team-high six rebounds. As a team, the Privateers shot 43.9 percent (25-of-57) from the field, 41.2 percent (7-of-17) from long range, and 80 percent (8-of-10) at the charity stripe.
For the Mariners, Alfonzo Stokes led the way with 20 points. Jacob Narvaez tallied 17 points, while Jalen Benson finished with 11 points and five rebounds. Wilton Causey posted 10 points to go along with a game-high seven rebounds, and Mikey Buscetto notched six assists and five steals for Mitchell. The Mariners shot 59.6 percent (28-of-47) as a team, including 42.9 percent (3-of-7) from three-point land. Mitchell was 19-for-26 (73.1 percent) at the free throw line.
Maritime is back home on Monday night, when CCNY (0-2) visits Riesenberg Gymnasium at 7 p.m. It will mark the end of a stretch of four games in seven days to open the season.
