THROGGS NECK, NY – Trailing by one with 20 seconds left, the Maritime College men's basketball team had the ball and a chance to win on Monday night.
Tyler Anderson's (Smithtown, NY) layup was blocked, however, and the Privateers were forced to foul. Maritime got another chance when CCNY's Daniel Piszczatwoski missed the front end of a one-and-one and
Theo Noble (Bronx, NY) grabbed the rebound with four seconds remaining. Anderson's halfcourt heave at the buzzer was short, though, and the Privateers (2-2) fell to the Beavers (1-2), 64-63, at Riesenberg Gymnasium.
CCNY led by 12 points, 50-38, midway through the second half when Noble drained a three to begin Maritime's comeback effort. The Privateers pulled within one, 62-61, on an Anderson layup with 1:45 to go, then, after a
Robbie Mitchell (Richmond, NY) steal, took the lead on
Ryan Donovan's (North Salem, NY) layup with 1:05 left. Piszczatowski sank a layup on the other end, though, putting the Beavers back in front.
Mitchell missed a layup on the ensuing Maritime possession, but
Aleksandar Begovic (Kodor, Montenegro) grabbed the offensive board. His layup was also off the mark, however, and CCNY secured the rebound. The Privateers got another opportunity when Piszczatowski missed a free throw and Mitchell pulled down the carom, setting up the final sequence.
Donovan
finished with a team-best 16 points, while Noble and Anderson added 15 points apiece. Noble also had eight rebounds, and Anderson dished out four assists. Mitchell
tallied seven points and six boards to go along with four blocks. As a team, Maritime shot 37.3 percent (22-of-59) from the field, 35.3 percent (6-of-17) from downtown, and 61.9 percent (13-of-21) at the free throw line.
The Privateers scored the first eight points of the game and led throughout the first half. CCNY forced a 26-26 tie with 4:05 remaining until halftime before
Jake Murphy (Rockville Centre, NY) sank a pair of jumpers for Maritime. The Privateers held a 30-28 cushion at halftime.
However, CCNY began the second half on a seven-point run to open up a 35-30 lead. The Beavers continued their rally, eventually extending their advantage to a game-high 12 points at 50-38 with 11:56 to play.
For the Beavers, Yassine Sakhi recorded a game-high 24 points. Bayame Bah just missed a double-double with nine points and nine rebounds, while Ricardo Dixon notched seven points, 11 boards, five blocks and three assists. Dashaun Galloway, meanwhile, posted six rebounds, five assists and four steals. CCNY outrebounded Maritime 48-37 and shot 43.5 percent (27-of-62) from the floor. The Beavers were 3-for-10 (30 percent) from long range and 7-for-16 (43.8 percent) at the charity stripe.
After playing four games in seven days to begin the season, the Privateers will now have nearly a week off before returning to action. Maritime will visit Columbia for an exhibition contest on Sunday at 1 p.m. The Privateers' next regular season game isn't until Nov. 22, when they host NYU (2-0) at 7 p.m.
