THROGGS NECK, NY – For the first time this century, the Maritime College men's basketball team is 2-0 to start the season. The Privateers and York (0-2) were tied with two minutes left before Maritime ended the game on a 10-3 run to earn its second straight victory, 60-53, at Riesenberg Gymnasium on Thursday night.
York's Terrell Fullerton drained a three-pointer to tie the score at 50-50 with 2:07 remaining.
Tyler Anderson (Smithtown, NY) hit a trey on the ensuing Maritime possession, however, to put the Privateers back in front. After a York turnover,
Robbie Mitchell's (Richmond, NY) layup made it a five-point game, 55-50, with 57 seconds left.
Theo Noble (Bronx, NY) then sank two free throws to extend the margin to 57-50.
Ryan Donovan (North Salem, NY) added three foul shots down the stretch to seal the 60-53 win.
Anderson finished with 22 points on 9-for-11 shooting. He also had two blocks. Donovan tallied 14 points, six rebounds, five assists and three steals, while Mitchell recorded 13 points and seven boards.
Aleksandar Begovic (Kotor, Montenegro) added 11 rebounds, as Maritime held a 43-34 edge on the glass. As a team, the Privateers shot 36.8 percent (21-of-57) from the floor, 23.1 percent (6-of-26) from long range, and 80 percent (12-of-15) at the line.
Maritime led most of the way, but the advantage only reached double-digits once. The Privateers opened up a 23-17 cushion on a Donovan jumper with 4:04 left in the first half, then extended the margin to seven points, 27-20, at halftime.
A Donovan bucket four minutes into the second half gave Maritime its largest lead of the game, 37-26, before York rattled off nine straight points to get within two. After the Privateers pushed their advantage back to six points at 50-44 on
Amadou Kouyate's (Harlem, NY) layup with 6:57 left, the Cardinals used three-pointers from Matthew Smiley and Fullerton to even the score at 50-50.
Fullerton had a game-high 26 points to pace the Cardinals. Averi Parker grabbed nine rebounds to go along with six points, while Smiley contributed seven points and eight boards. As a team, York shot 35 percent (21-of-60) form the field, 24 percent (6-of-25) from downtown and 71.4 percent (5-of-7) at the charity stripe.
After opening the season with two straight at home, the Privateers hit the road for the first time on Saturday, when they visit Mitchell (0-1) at 1 p.m.
