THROGGS NECK, NY – The Maritime College men's soccer team scored four minutes into its contest with Purchase on Wednesday night. However, the Privateers (1-8-2, 0-5-1 Skyline) allowed two second-half goals, including the game-winner in the 88
th minute, as the Panthers (6-5-0, 2-3-0 Skyline) earned a 2-1 victory at Reinhart Field.
Maritime's goal came on its first offensive chance.
Justin Song's (Syosset, NY) shot was saved and went directly to
George Kanellopoulos (Bayside, NY), who put home the rebound for his first collegiate tally. The Privateers outshot the Panthers 12-4 in the first half, but Purchase goalkeeper Mario Olmedo made four saves in the opening 45 minutes to keep it a 1-0 game.
In the 58
th minute, the Panthers tied it when Leo Conte scored on a free kick from just outside the box. It looked like Maritime had regained the lead in the 84
th minute. The goal was called back for offside, however. Conte then scored again in the 88
th minute, taking a diagonal pass from the left side and sending it past
Augusto Lebron (Valley Stream, NY) to give Purchase a 2-1 advantage. The Privateers had one last chance in the final minute.
Thomas Luongo's (Center Moriches, NY) attempt sailed wide, though, and Purchase held on for the win.
Olmedo (4-1-0) was credited with five saves for the Panthers in the winning effort, while Lebron (1-4-1) took the loss for Maritime. Song had the assist, his second of the year, on the Kanellopoulos goal.
On Saturday night, the Privateers return to action with a 7 p.m. contest against Old Westbury (1-7-1, 0-4-1 Skyline) at Reinhart Field.
