FARMINGDALE, NY – On Thursday night, the Maritime College volleyball team wrapped up Skyline Conference play by visiting Farmingdale. Farmingdale (14-7, 10-1 Skyline) clinched a share of the Skyline regular season title with a 25-7, 25-15, 25-18 win over the Privateers (2-18, 1-10 Skyline) at the Walter A. Lynch Sports Center.
Farmingdale scored the first five points of the match and quickly extended that lead to 10-1. The Rams easily took the opening set by a 25-7 count.
After the sides traded points early in the second set, Farmingdale used a 12-4 run to open up a 15-8 advantage. The Privateers responded with a 5-1 spurt to pull within 16-12, but the Rams won nine of the next 12 points to close out the set, 25-15, and take a 2-0 lead in the match.
In the third set, Farmingdale built an 8-6 cushion before a kill by
Kelly Kuhn (Lansdale, PA) started a 4-1 Maritime run that put the Privateers in front, 10-9. After the Rams scored the next two points to regain the lead, Maritime rattled off four in a row to take a 14-11 advantage. However, Farmingdale countered with a 7-0 spurt to go ahead 18-14. The Rams claimed the set by a score of 25-18 to finish off the straight-sets win.
Celyna Custodio (Danbury, CT) paced Maritime with six kills and seven digs.
Erica Pagano (Lawrence, NY) added five kills, while
Jessica Mele (Southold, NY) contributed six digs.
Brooke Kirchner (Lawrence, NY) distributed 11 assists for the Privateers.
For the Rams, who hit .435 (37 kills, seven errors, 69 attempts) as a team, Cathleen Farrell led the way with 10 kills. She also tallied six digs. Kate Flamio, meanwhile, finished with nine kills and six service aces. Lexi Cavalieri handed out 15 assists, and Mikayla Dalton recorded a team-best seven digs for Farmingdale.
Maritime concludes the season on Saturday with a pair of matches at St. Joseph's LI. The Privateers take on Bard (7-16) at 1 p.m. before squaring off with the host Golden Eagles (13-11) at 3 p.m. It will be Maritime's second meeting with St. Joseph's LI this season. The Golden Eagles earned a 3-0 victory at Riesenberg Gymnasium on Sept. 29.
