PATCHOGUE, NY – The Maritime College volleyball team wrapped up its 2022 season on Sunday with a tri-match at St. Joseph's LI. After suffering a 25-22, 25-10, 25-15 loss to Bard (8-16), the Privateers (2-20) fell to the host Golden Eagles (15-11) by a score of 25-13, 25-12, 25-10 at the Danzi Athletic Center.
After Bard jumped out to an 18-10 lead in the first set of Maritime's first match of the day, the Privateers responded with four straight points, including a pair of
Victoria Cordero (Bronx, NY) service aces to pull within four, 18-14. The Raptors pushed the margin back to six points at 23-17, but Maritime came storming back, scoring five consecutive points to cut its deficit to one, 23-22. However, Bard took the next two points to claim the set, 25-22.
Maritime captured the first two points of the second set before Bard rattled off nine of the next 10 to make it 9-3. The Privateers trimmed the margin to three at 10-7, but the Raptors ended the set on a 15-3 spurt to close out a 25-10 win. Bard then clinched the match with a 25-15 third-set triumph.
Celyna Custodio (Danbury, CT) finished with eight kills and seven digs to pace the Privateers.
Jessica Mele (Southold, NY) also had seven digs, while
Brooke Kirchner (Lawrence, NY) tallied five digs to go along with 14 assists.
Ryan Lum posted match-highs with 19 kills and nine digs for Bard. Anna Skamser registered seven kills, and Becca Wintjen recorded five aces. Adi David, meanwhile, contributed 28 assists, six digs and four aces. The Raptors hit a combined .272 (35 kills, 13 errors, 81 attempts) in the match.
In the Privateers' match against St. Joseph's LI, the teams traded the first eight points. After a Mele kill put Maritime in front 5-4, the Golden Eagles scored 15 of the next 17 to open up a 19-7 advantage. St. Joseph's LI won the set, 25-13, to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
It was a similar start to the second set, as an
Erica Pagano (Lawrence, NY) kill gave the Privateers a 4-3 lead. The Golden Eagles went back in front, 11-6, before Maritime scored three of the next four points to get within 12-9. However, St. Joseph's LI closed the set on a 13-3 spurt to claim a 25-12 win. The Golden Eagles then finished off the 3-0 victory with a 25-10 triumph in set three.
Custodio again led the Privateers with six kills. She finishes her career with 708 total kills, second-most in program history. Kirchner distributed nine assists, and Pagano had a team-best seven digs in her final collegiate match. Cordero, meanwhile, tallied six digs.
For the Golden Eagles, Madison Gremli led the way with seven kills and Jamie Trowbridge added six kills. Kate D'Angelo had nine digs, as St. Joseph's LI held a 43-30 edge in that category. Karen Barrera Carreno distributed 21 assists to go along with six aces, while Kellianne Dempsey served five aces. As a team, St. Joseph's LI hit a combined .260 (30-11-73) in the victory.
