KINGS POINT, NY – An own goal proved to be the difference in the Maritime College men's soccer team's contest at Merchant Marine on Wednesday night. The deflection off a defender in the 60
th minute was enough to give the Mariners (7-4-5, 4-1-4 Skyline) a 1-0 victory over the Privateers (1-11-3, 0-7-2 Skyline) at Bartoszek Field.
Merchant Marine had a number of scoring chances in the first half, outshooting Maritime 11-2 over the opening 45 minutes.
Danny Madeira (New Rochelle, NY) did his part to keep the game scoreless, however, recording a pair of saves in the period.
After Madeira made a save in the 60
th minute, the rebound bounced off a Maritime defender and into the net. Madeira continued his brilliant play after that, turning away seven Merchant Marine shots in the second half. The Privateers were unable to notch an equalizer, though, and the Mariners came away with a 1-0 win.
Madeira (0-7-2) ended up with nine saves in the losing effort. Merchant Marine goalkeeper Chase Miller (6-3-5), meanwhile, was credited with his fifth clean sheet of the season.
The Privateers conclude their home schedule by welcoming Farmingdale (6-5-2, 4-2-2 Skyline) to Reinhart Field at 7 p.m. on Friday. Maritime will honor its three graduating seniors—
Thomas Luongo (Center Moriches, NY),
Ege Ozaman (Queens, NY) and
Liam Reddan (Sayville, NY)—prior to the game.
