NEW YORK – Less than 48 hours after earning a draw against Old Westbury on Saturday night, the Maritime College men's soccer team was back in action for another Skyline Conference game on Monday. The Privateers (1-9-3, 0-6-2 Skyline) took on St. Joseph's Brooklyn at Randall's Island Field 74, but dropped a 3-1 decision to the Bears (4-4-3, 2-3-2 Skyline).
St. Joseph's Brooklyn got on the board early when Victor Naci found the back of the net in the fourth minute. Maritime responded in the 15
th minute, though.
George Kanellopoulos (Bayside, NY) took a corner kick that connected perfectly with
Jude Callan (Centerport, NY), who headed it in to tie the game. Naci scored again 10 minutes later, however, to put St. Joseph's Brooklyn back in front.
The Bears had a chance to extend their lead after
Jake Cosgrove (Seaford, NY) was shown a red card in the 52
nd minute, but the penalty kick went wide. Naci then completed a hat trick in the 62
nd minute, making it 3-1 St. Joseph's Brooklyn.
Danny Madeira (New Rochelle, NY) (0-5-2) faced 21 St. Joseph's Brooklyn shots, including 15 in the second half, and stopped five of them. Callan's goal was his first collegiate tally, while Kanellopoulos was credited with his second assist of the year.
Naci, the conference leader in goals, now has 16 after scoring all three of the Bears' tallies. Pablo Mejia assisted on all three scores. St. Joseph's Brooklyn goalkeeper Leonel Bravo (4-4-3), meanwhile, made three saves.
After playing three games in six days, the Privateers now have almost a full week off before their next game. Maritime wraps up its non-conference schedule with a 2 p.m. visit to Penn State Berks (3-8-1) on Sunday.
