FARMINGDALE, NY – The Maritime College men's basketball team rallied from a seven-point deficit to take a 73-72 lead with 4:41 remaining in its game at Old Westbury on Thursday night. However, the Privateers (3-13, 0-9 Skyline) were unable to hold on, as the Panthers (8-8, 4-5 Skyline) rallied for an 84-78 win at Nold Hall.
Old Westbury held a 70-63 advantage when
Mike Regan (Dix Hills, NY) hit a three to start the 10-2 run that put Maritime in front.
Griffin McNally (Huntington Station, NY) drained a three-pointer to give the Privateers the lead. Charles Wingate sank two free throws on the other end, and Zachary Cummings followed with a trey to make it a four-point game before a Regan triple again made it a one-point contest, 77-76, with 3:01 left. The Panthers outscored Maritime 7-2 the rest of the way, though, to close out the victory.
Ryan Donovan (North Salem, NY) had his third consecutive 20-point outing, finishing with a game-high 24 to go along with seven rebounds and four assists. Regan
contributed 15 points and three assists, while
Jaylin Gray (Brooklyn, NY) tallied 11 points and three assists.
Theo Noble (Bronx, NY) added 10 points off the bench for the Privateers, who outrebounded the Panthers 32-25. Maritime was 26-for-55 (47.3 percent) from the field, 7-for-23 (30.4 percent) from long range and 17-for-21 (81 percent) at the free throw line.
It was a back-and-forth contest throughout, as there were 12 ties and 15 lead changes. Old Westbury took an early 14-9 advantage before Maritime rallied to go up 24-19. The Panthers regained the lead at 34-32 before a Donovan trey put the Privateers back in front.
After trailing 40-39 at halftime, Maritime opened the second half with back-to-back buckets from Donovan. The Privateers built a five-point, 52-47 cushion with 15:35 left before Old Westbury rallied to go in front 60-57. The Panthers eventually extended the margin to a game-high seven points at 70-63 with 7:37 remaining.
For Old Westbury, Wingate led the way with 21 points, and he added five assists. Cummings registered 20 points and eight assists, while Carl Damour posted 13 points. Jonathan Jamieson grabbed seven rebounds to go along with 13 points, and Jordan Johnson-Rader contributed six boards. The Panthers shot 52.7 percent (29-of-55) from the floor, 48 percent (12-of-25) from three-point land, and 87.5 percent (14-of-16) at the charity stripe.
On Saturday night, Maritime begins a three-game homestand with an 8 p.m. matchup against No. 7 Yeshiva (15-1, 8-0 Skyline) at Riesenberg Gymnasium. It will be the Privateers' third contest in five days.
