THROGGS NECK, NY – In a game that was delayed 16 and a half hours due to the winter storm, the Maritime College men's basketball team welcomed No.7 Yeshiva to Riesenberg Gymnasium on Sunday afternoon. The Privateers (3-14, 0-10 Skyline) got off to a good start, jumping out to an early 7-2 lead before the Maccabees (16-1, 9-0 Skyline) pulled away for a 70-42 triumph.
The Privateers made their first three shots—a
Robbie Mitchell (Richmond, NY) layup, a
Ryan Donovan (North Salem, NY) three, and a layup by Donovan. However, Yeshiva responded with an 11-0 rally to take a 13-7 advantage. The margin reached 12 points at 24-12 before Maritime rattled off five straight points to pull within 24-17.
Yeshiva led 38-21 at halftime and gradually extended the margin throughout the second half. After the Maccabees' advantage reached a game-high 32 points at 70-38,
Jack Driscoll (Smithtown, NY) sank a trey and
Jake Murphy (Rockville Centre, NY) hit a free throw to cap the scoring in Maritime's 70-42 loss.
Donovan paced the Privateers with 17 points and five rebounds.
Jaylin Gray (Brooklyn, NY) tallied nine points and two assists, while
Sean Flynn (Flushing, NY) had seven points. Maritime shot 34.1 percent (15-of-44) from the field, 28.6 percent (6-of-21) from three-point land, and 40 percent (6-of-15) at the free throw line.
For the Maccabees, Gabriel Leifer registered 12 points, 12 rebounds, six assists and three steals. Ryan Tyrell and Oren Betesh added 12 points apiece, and Matan Zucker contributed 10 points to go along with five boards. Yeshiva shot 50.9 percent (27-of-53) from the floor and outrebounded Maritime 39-18. The Maccabees were 8-for-19 (42.1 percent) from long range and 8-for-9 (88.9 percent) at the charity stripe.
Maritime returns to action on Wednesday, when St. Joseph's LI (9-7, 5-4 Skyline) visits Riesenberg Gymnasium at 7 p.m. As a result of the Yeshiva game being moved from Saturday to Sunday, Thursday night's non-conference contest against William Paterson has been cancelled.
