THROGGS NECK, NY – Ryan Donovan (Carmel, NY) had his second double-double of the season on Tuesday night, notching 22 points and 12 rebounds in the Maritime College men's basketball team's non-conference game against Mitchell. It was not enough to lead the Privateers (3-12) to victory, however, as the visiting Mariners (8-8) posted an 85-71 victory at Riesenberg Gymnasium.
Jaylin Gray (Brooklyn, NY) finished with 13 points, six rebounds and five assists, while
Sean Flynn (Flushing, NY) contributed 11 points and seven boards.
Theo Noble (Bronx, NY) added 10 points, five rebounds and four assists off the bench, and
Mike Regan (Huntington Station, NY) handed out a team-best six assists. Maritime shot 50.9 percent (28-of-55) from the field and outrebounded Mitchell 38-36. The Privateers were 3-for-7 (42.9 percent) from long range and 12-for-17 (70.6 percent) at the charity stripe.
Maritime fell behind early, 17-4, before pulling within eight at 26-18. However, Mitchell scored the next six points to extend its cushion to 32-18, and the Mariners held a 44-32 edge at the break.
After Mitchell opened up its largest lead of the game, a 54-38 advantage with 17:03 remaining, the Privateers came storming back. Maritime went on a 29-19 run to trim its deficit to six, 73-67, with 4:57 left. The Privateers would get no closer, though, as Mitchell pulled away for an 85-71 win.
For the Mariners, Alfonzo Stokes recorded a double-double with 31 points and 11 rebounds. Mikey Buscetto tallied 13 points, six assists and six steals, while Jalen Benson posted 11 points and six assists. Jacob Narvaez, meanwhile, collected seven boards to go along with eight points. Mitchell shot 47.1 percent (33-of-70) from the floor, 22.2 percent (4-of-18) from downtown, and 62.5 percent (15-of-24) at the free throw line.
The Privateers (0-8 Skyline) resume their Skyline Conference slate with an 8 p.m. showdown at Old Westbury (7-8, 3-5 Skyline) on Thursday. It will be Maritime's only road contest in a six-game stretch, which also includes a non-conference tilt against William Paterson next Thursday, Feb. 3, that has been added to the schedule.
