RIVERDALE, NY – Down by two with 23 seconds left, the Maritime College men's basketball team had the ball and a chance to take the last shot on Saturday afternoon at Mount St. Vincent. After a timeout and two offensive rebounds,
Griffin McNally (Huntington Station, NY) fired a three-pointer at the buzzer that would've given the Privateers the victory. However, the shot was off the mark, and the Dolphins (5-8, 3-2 Skyline) held on for a 71-69 win over Maritime (3-9, 0-6 Maritime) at the Sharp Center.
It was a back-and-forth game throughout, as there were a total of 11 ties and 18 lead changes, and neither side had a lead larger than six points all afternoon. The last lead change came with 1:05 left, when Mount St. Vincent's Jeremiah Simmons hit a jumper to put the Dolphins up 70-69.
After the Privateers missed a trey, Shakirro Samuels grabbed the rebound and was immediately fouled. He made the first free throw, but missed the second and
Theo Noble (Bronx, NY) secured the rebound. Maritime then used its final timeout to set up a final play.
Ryan Donovan (North Salem, NY) finished with 26 points and five rebounds in his return to the lineup after missing three games due to injury.
Jaylin Gray (Brooklyn, NY) added 11 points, five boards and eight assists, while Noble
contributed 12 points and five rebounds off the bench. The Privateers shot 39.6 percent (21-of-53) from the field, 38.5 percent (10-of-26) from long range, and 70.8 percent (17-of-24) at the free throw line.
Mount St. Vincent scored the first six points of the game before the Privateers rallied to take an 11-10 lead on a Donovan trey with 14:48 remaining in the first half. After the Dolphins regained a four-point edge, 15-11, Maritime responded with an 18-8 spurt to go up 29-23 with 4:07 left until halftime. Mount St. Vincent ended the half on a 13-7 run, though, and the teams went into the locker room deadlocked at 36-36.
The Dolphins sank a three-pointer on their opening possession of the second half, but Maritime quickly countered with eight of the next 10 points to regain a three-point edge, 44-41. Mount St. Vincent evened the score at 49-49 with 11:27 remaining before back-to-back treys by Gray and
Alec Downes (Seaford, NY) put the Privateers ahead by six, 55-49. However, Mount St. Vincent rallied to tie it at 57-57 with 8:13 to go, and neither side would have a lead greater than three the rest of the way.
For Mount St. Vincent, Dan Porcic led the way with 22 points and six rebounds. Aaron Darab registered 11 points and five assists, and Kelvin Turner-Harris tallied nine points to go along with five boards. As a team, the Dolphins shot 51 percent (26-of-51) from the floor, 42.1 percent (8-of-19) from downtown, and 61.1 percent (11-of-18) at the charity stripe.
On Wednesday, Maritime visits St. Joseph's Brooklyn (1-12, 0-5 Skyline) for a 7 p.m. matchup. It marks the first time all season that the Privateers will play consecutive road games.
