BROOKLYN, NY – On Wednesday night, the Maritime College men's basketball team visited Skyline Conference rival St. Joseph's Brooklyn. After trailing by as many as 13 points, the Privateers (3-10, 0-7 Skyline) rallied within three in the second half before the Bears (2-12, 1-5 Skyline) closed out a 60-53 victory at the Hill Center.
St. Joseph's Brooklyn built an 18-8 lead with 14:14 remaining in the first half before Maritime responded with an 11-0 run, going in front 19-18 on a
Robbie Mitchell (Richmond, NY) trey with 10:04 left until halftime. The Bears countered with six straight points to regain a 24-19 advantage, but the Privateers again rallied back, trimming their deficit to 27-25 on
Ryan Donovan's (North Salem, NY) layup at the 3:00 mark. However, St. Joseph's Brooklyn scored the final five points of the half to take a 32-25 cushion into the locker room.
The Bears extended the margin to a game-high 13 points at 40-27 with 15:56 to play, but the Privateers slowly chipped away. Maritime pulled within five at 50-45 with 4:41 left, then
Jaylin Gray (Brooklyn, NY) hit two free throws at the 1:55 mark to make it a 52-49 game. After St. Joseph's Brooklyn pushed its advantage back to seven points, a
Mike Regan (Dix Hills, NY) trey with 1:04 remaining once again brought the Privateers within three, 56-53. Maritime would get no closer, however, as the Bears made four foul shots in the final minute to close out a 63-56 win.
Donovan
paced the Privateers with 18 points, while Mitchell
contributed 13 points off the bench. Gray
had five assists and four steals to go along with a team-high eight rebounds.
Nick Ovanessian (Bayside, NY) and
Sean Flynn (Flushing, NY) each grabbed seven boards, and Regan
distributed five assists. Maritime shot 30.6 percent (19-of-62) from the field, but was just 4-for-28 (14.3 percent) from long range and 11-for-21 (52.4 percent) at the free throw line.
For St. Joseph's Brooklyn, Chris Mikos had a double-double with 21 points and 12 rebounds. Chris Williams registered 11 points and seven boards, while Richie Simon posted 10 boards and four assists. The Bears shot 36.5 percent (19-of-52) from the floor, 20 percent (4-of-20) from downtown, and 72 percent (18-of-25) at the charity stripe.
After back-to-back road games, the Privateers will play four of their next five contests at Riesenberg Gymnasium, starting with a 1 p.m. matchup against Farmingdale (8-7, 4-2 Skyline) on Saturday.
