Late Run Lifts Mount St. Mary Past Privateers

THROGGS NECK, NY – After trailing at halftime, the Maritime College men's basketball team led by as many as 10 points in the second half against Mount St. Mary on Wednesday night.  However, the Knights (4-6, 2-0 Skyline) held the Privateers (3-8, 0-5 Skyline) scoreless over the final 4:44 to notch a 63-56 victory at Riesenberg Gymnasium.

Mount St. Mary scored the first six points of the game, but Maritime quickly rallied back to go ahead 11-8.  It was tied at 21-21 with 5:16 left before halftime when the Knights went on an 8-2 run to open up a 29-23 advantage.  The Privateers responded with layups from Mike Regan (Dix Hills, NY) and Jaylin Gray (Brooklyn, NY), though, to cut their deficit to two, 29-27, at intermission.

Maritime tied the score early in the second half and eventually built a 46-37 cushion.  After Mount St. Mary got back within four at 46-42, the Privateers used an 8-2 run to take their largest lead of the game, 54-44, at the 7:00 mark.

The Knights used an 8-0 rally to cut their deficit to two, 54-52, before Robbie Mitchell (Richmond, NY) sank a pair of free throws with 4:44 remaining. Those would prove to be Maritime's final points, however, as Mount St. Mary ended the contest on an 11-0 spurt to claim the win, 63-56.

Gray (Brooklyn, NY) paced the Privateers with 12 points, eight rebounds and six assists.  Regan added nine points and five boards, while Sean Flynn (Flushing, NY) contributed nine points of his own.  Maritime shot 31.8 percent (21-of-66) overall, but was doomed by 8.3 percent (2-of-24) shooting from three-point range.  The Privateers were 12-for-20 (60 percent) at the free throw line.

Chris Yearwood had a game-high 20 points for Mount St. Mary, and Jayden Figueroa posted a double-double with 16 points and 14 rebounds.  Jack Lotito, meanwhile, grabbed 10 boards to go along with seven assists.  The Knights went 21-for-60 (35 percent) from the field, 9-for-27 (33.3 percent) from downtown, and 12-for-15 (80 percent) at the charity stripe.

On Saturday, Maritime begins a two-game road trip with a 1 p.m. visit to Mount St. Vincent (4-7, 2-2 Skyline).
