PURCHASE, NY – After earning a straight-sets win over Lehman on Saturday, the Maritime College women's volleyball team took the court looking for its second consecutive victory on Tuesday night. The Privateers (2-5, 0-2 Skyline), however, suffered a 25-10, 25-9, 25-8 loss to Manhanttanville (7-3, 1-0 Skyline) at Kennedy Gymnasium.
The Valiants built a 7-1 cushion in the first set, then extended their lead to 11-3. After Maritime scored three straight points to pull within 18-9, Manhattanville ended the set on a 7-1 run to earn a 25-10 win.
There were four ties early in the second set before Manhattanville used a 10-0 spurt to open up a 16-5 advantage. The Valiants took the set by a 25-9 count to take a 2-0 lead in the match. Manhattanville then took the first six points of the third set en route to a 25-8 win that finished off the victory.
Meghan Eagleton (Poughkeepsie, NY) paced the Privateers with seven digs, while
Victoria Cordero (Bronx, NY) and
Jessica Mele (Southold, NY) contributed six digs apiece.
Brooke Kirchner (Lawrence, NY) handed out six assists to go along with five digs.
Celyna Custodio (Danbury, CT) added two blocks for Maritime.
For Manhattanville, Sofia Morales led the way with eight kills. Vianca Vital finished with 18 assists, six kills, six digs and six service aces. Grace Ballagas had a match-high 14 digs, while Emily Gonzalez served nine of the Valiants' 24 aces.
Maritime plays the second of three straight Skyline road matches on Thursday night, when it visits St. Joseph's (LI) (3-4, 1-0 Skyline) at 7 p.m.
