PATCHOGUE, NY – The Maritime College women's volleyball team continued its stretch of five matches in seven days by visiting Skyline Conference rival St. Joseph's (LI) on Thursday night. The Privateers (2-6, 0-3 Skyline) were unable to come away with their first conference win of the year, however, as the Golden Eagles (4-4, 2-1 Skyline) posted a 25-14, 25-15, 25-17 triumph at the Danzi Athletic Center.
After the teams traded points early in the first set, St. Joseph's (LI) went on a 5-1 run to open up a 7-3 lead. The Privateers rallied back within one at 13-12, but the Golden Eagles responded with eight consecutive points to make it 21-12. St. Joseph's (LI) took the set by a 25-14 count.
Maritime raced out to a 4-1 second-set lead before St. Joseph's (LI) scored six straight points to pull ahead 7-4. After the Golden Eagles increased their advantage to 14-7, the Privateers used a 6-0 run of their own to get back within one, 14-13. St. Joseph's (LI) ended the set on an 11-2 spurt, though, to finish off a 25-15 victory and take a 2-0 lead in the match.
In the third set, it was tight early on. St. Joseph's (LI) eventually built a 16-9 lead before Maritime claimed three of the next four points to trim its deficit to 17-12. The Golden Eagles scored the next three points, however, to bring the margin back to eight, 20-12. St. Joseph's (LI) completed the 3-0 sweep with a 25-17 third-set win.
Celyna Custodio (Danbury, CT) and
Jessica Mele (Southold, NY) paced the Privateers with five kills apiece. Mele also had six digs.
Victoria Cordero (Bronx, NY) and
Erica Pagano (Lawrence, NY) each collected a team-best seven digs, while
Brooke Kirchner (Lawrence, NY) distributed 12 assists for Maritime.
Amanda Goldstein recorded a match-high 13 kills for St. Joseph's (LI). Tara Langford finished with 21 assists, and April Sexton posted 12 digs. Kayla Martin tallied five service aces, while Jamie Trowbridge and Kaitlynn D'Angelo both served four aces. As a team, the Golden Eagles had 16 aces and hit a combined .296 (36 kills, 12 errors, 81 attempts).
On Saturday, the Privateers end their six-match road trip with a pair of contests. Maritime takes on Sarah Lawrence (5-8, 3-0 Skyline) in a Skyline showdown at 11 a.m., then faces Baruch (2-10) in a non-conference affair at 1 p.m. Both matches will be played at Sarah Lawrence's Campbell Sports Center.
