THROGGS NECK, NY – Trailing 2-0, the Maritime College men's soccer team mounted a furious comeback over the final seven minutes of its Skyline Conference opener against Mount St. Vincent on Wednesday night. The Privateers (3-2-0, 0-1-0 Skyline) nearly tied the game in the 90th minute, but the Dolphins (4-0-1, 2-0-0 Skyline) held on for a 3-2 victory at Reinhart Field.
Mount St. Vincent scored the game's first goal on a perfectly placed free kick by Ian Lamas in the 29th minute, then increased its lead to 2-0 on Carlos Romero's 51st-minute tally. It would remain that way until the 84th minute, when
Jack Burkhardt (Cutchogue, NY) got the Privateers on the board.
After the Dolphins regained their two-goal advantage, Maritime was awarded a penalty kick in the 87th minute.
Joseph Cebollero (Commack, NY) stepped up to the spot and put it home, making the score 3-2. The Privateers then peppered Mount St. Vincent goalkeeper Joel Luna with shots over the game's final two minutes, but he saved two and a third was blocked.
Luna (4-0-1) finished with six saves in the victory.
Tim Nichols (West Seneca, NY) (3-2-0), meanwhile, was credited with three saves for Maritime.
Burkardt's goal was his first collegiate tally, while Cebllero scored for the second consecutive game. He now leads the team with three goals on the season.
Thomas Luongo (Center Moriches, NY) and
Jack Dugan (Mount Sinai, NY) each recorded an assist on the Burkhardt goal.
The Privateers return to action on Saturday night, when they visit Sarah Lawrence (2-5-0, 0-1-0 Skyline) at 7 p.m.
