The New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) announced on Wednesday, June 23 that the Maritime College football team will become a member of the conference effective July 1, 2023. The Privateers will continue to compete in the Eastern Collegiate Football Conference (ECFC) for the 2021 and 2022 seasons.
"I am very pleased and proud that Maritime College has been selected as the newest member the NEWMAC Athletic Conference," said Rear Admiral Michael Alfultis, Ph.D. "To be included in the NEWMAC reflects the dedication, diligence, values, and traditions that have become the hallmarks of Maritime College football. We look forward to participating in an intercollegiate experience that will enrich our student-athletes, and further develop their strength and character."
The Maritime College football team has competed in the ECFC since 2009 and have made two trips to the NCAA tournament, with the most recent coming in 2019 in head coach
Mickey Rehring's first season at the helm. The Privateers will join seven other football programs in the NEWMAC in 2023: USMMA, MIT, WPI, Springfield, Coast Guard, Norwich, and Catholic University.
"As an entire program, we are incredibly excited about this move into the NEWMAC conference," said coach Rehring. "The NEWMAC is going to provide an exciting challenge for us with a group of really strong football programs and we are ready for those challenges in the coming years. This move will allow Privateer Football to retain some current and previous opponents while facing new challenges throughout the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast regions."
