Strong Defense Fuels Men's Lacrosse in 9-6 Victory as Privateers Improve to 4-0

The Maritime College men's lacrosse team continued their dominant 2021 season on Friday night as they defeated St. Joseph's Long Island by a score of 9-6. The defensive battle moved the Privateers to 4-0 on the season and they are now allowing just 8.25 goals per game as a team.

Maritime got off to a slow start offensively as they didn't score in the opening quarter of play. Luckily, Kyle Bockelman (Melville, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East) and the Privateers defensive unit kept them in the game by only giving up one goal to the Golden Eagles. The second quarter saw more of the same from Maritime, only allowing one more goal, but the offense made the right adjustments and took a 3-2 lead at halftime. Patrick Schnell (Jericho, NY/Jericho) was the one got the offense moving as he netted back-to-back unassisted goals. Then with 1:33 remaining in the half, Mike Leake (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) found Kyle Orton (Lewes, DE/Cape Henlopen) to make it a one goal advantage heading into the second half.

Feeding off the momentum from the first half, Maritime began to take full control of the game in the third quarter. Brian Drost (Shoreham, NY/Shoreham-Wading River) and Connor Buschle (Bellport, NY/St. John the Baptist) opened up the second half scoring, and then Derek Walter (Ronkonkoma, NY/Connetquot) and Christian Vera (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) concluded the the third quarter with a pair of goals to make it a 7-4 lead heading to the final frame. The Privateers widened their lead to five goals in the fourth quarter and eventually closed out the 9-6 win to make it four straight wins to open up the season.

Offensively, Maritime continued to spread the ball around effectively as Schnell was the only player with at least two goals. Leake also finished with three points in the game, all three coming on assists. Kevin Buser (Babylon, NY/) continued his dominance at the faceoff by winning 14 of 17 and led the team with seven ground balls along with Orton. Kyle Bockelman (Melville, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East) picked up his fourth win in goal with an eight save performance.

The Privateers will return to Reinhart Field next to take on Farmingdale St. on Saturday, April 17 at noon.
