Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Late Rally Falls Short at NYU

BROOKLYN, NY – After trailing by 14 points with six minutes remaining, the Maritime College men's basketball team pulled within five in the final minute.  The Privateers (2-2) ultimately ran out of time, however, as NYU (5-1) held on for a 74-68 victory at the Brooklyn Athletic Facility on Tuesday night.

NYU opened up a 61-47 advantage before the Privateers went on a 19-10 rally, cutting their deficit to 71-66 on Nick Ovanessian's (Bayside, NY) trey at the 51-second mark.  Bobby Hawkinson responded with a pair of free throws on the other end, but Ryan Donovan (North Salem, NY) sank a pair of foul shots to again make it a five-point game.  It would get no closer, though, and a Hayden Peek free throw capped the scoring in NYU's 74-68 triumph.

Jaylin Gray (Brooklyn, NY) tallied a career-high 27 points while also distributing nine assists.  Donovan just missed his second consecutive double-double with 19 points and eight rebounds.  Mike Regan (Dix Hills, NY), meanwhile, finished with eight points and four steals.  The Privateers shot 35.5 percent (22-of-62) from the field, 29.4 percent (10-of-34) from three-point land, and 82.4 percent (14-of-17) at the charity stripe.

Maritime took a 16-6 lead on a Griffin McNally (Huntington Station, NY) three-pointer midway through the first half, but NYU responded with a 20-3 run to go ahead 26-19.  The Privateers countered with six straight points to get back within one before a Hawkinson layup made it a three-point game, 28-25, at the break.

The teams traded runs early in the second half.  After the Violets used a 12-2 rally to build a 45-33 cushion, the Privateers went on a 12-5 spurt to pull within five, 50-45, with 10:03 remaining.  NYU responded by scoring 11 of the next 13 points to open up its biggest lead of the game, a 61-47 advantage with 6:01 left.

For the Violets, Hawkinson led the way with 25 points and 15 boards.  Jacob Sussman added 11 points and six rebounds, while Alex Maticiuc contributed 11 points off the bench.  As a team, NYU shot 49.1 percent (27-of-55) from the floor, 38.1 percent (8-of-21) from long range, and 60 percent (12-of-20) at the free throw line.

This was Maritime's only road contest in a six-game span.  The Privateers play the first of three straight at Riesenberg Gymnasium on Sunday, when they take on Mitchell (3-3) at 1 p.m.
