THROGGS NECK, NY – Ryan Donovan (North Salem, NY) and
Mike Regan (Dix Hills, NY) combined for 48 points in the Maritime College men's basketball team's dominant 79-51 win over CCNY (3-3) at Riesenberg Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon. Donovan had a double-double with 24 points and 10 rebounds, while Regan finished with 24 points and five boards in the victory, which moved the Privateers to 2-1 on the season.
Donovan also tallied four assists, three steals and two blocks.
Jaylin Gray (Brooklyn, NY), meanwhile, distributed nine assists and added four steals.
Griffin McNally (Huntington Station, NY) pulled down seven rebounds for the Privateers, who shot 49.3 percent (33-of-67) from the field. Maritime went 11-for-29 (37.9 percent) from long range and 2-for-6 (33.3 percent) at the free throw line.
Maritime got off to a blistering start, jumping out to a 10-2 advantage barely a minute into the game. CCNY rallied to tie the score at 10-10, but the Privateers responded with 10 straight points to take a 20-10 lead with 12:56 left in the first half. The cushion reached 20 points when a Donovan free throw made it 39-19 at the 3:47 mark, and Maritime held a 42-24 advantage at intermission.
Regan and Donovan had 36 of Maritime's 42 first-half points. Regan scored 19 points on 8-for-11 shooting, and Donovan tallied 17 points on 7-for-10 shooting in the opening 20 minutes.
After the Beavers scored the first six points of the second half to pull within 12 at 42-30, a
Theo Noble (Bronx, NY) rebound and putback started a 12-2 Maritime run that brought the margin back to 22 points, 54-32. A
Jack Driscoll (Smithtown, NY) three-pointer with 12 seconds left gave the Privateers their largest lead of the contest, a 79-49 advantage, before a late CCNY layup closed out the scoring in Maritime's 79-51 victory.
The 28-point margin of victory was the Privateers' largest since an 82-52 win over Sarah Lawrence on Nov. 15, 2013. In addition, Maritime has now posted back-to-back wins for the first time since a four-game streak from Jan. 25-Feb. 1, 2019.
Yassine Sakhi just missed a double-double for CCNY, finishing with 15 points and nine boards. Dashaun Galloway and Jordan Williams contributed eight points apiece, and Bayme Bah recorded 10 rebounds to go along with three blocks. As a team, the Beavers shot 32.8 percent (21-of-64) from the floor, 14.3 percent (3-of-21) from downtown, and 60 percent (6-of-12) at the charity stripe.
On Tuesday, the Privateers return to action with an 8 p.m. matchup at NYU (4-1). It will be Maritime's only road contest in a six-game span.
