WAYNE, NJ – The Maritime College men's swimming & diving team earned its second straight win to start the 2021-22 season on Saturday afternoon, defeating William Paterson by a score of 124-75 at the Wightman Pool. The women's squad, meanwhile, split its double dual meet, falling to William Paterson, 62-37, while also earning a 63-22 win over John Jay.
Edwin Moriarty (Long Beach, NY) got the Privateers off to a good start, winning each of the first two events. He swam the leadoff leg on Maritime's victorious 200 yard medley relay, then took first in the 1000 yard freestyle by more than a minute. His time was 11:03.43. Moriarty was joined in the medley relay by
Gabriel Menz (Vineland, NJ),
Michael Morton (St. John's, FL) and
Brian Reilly (Sayville, NY).
Morton also picked up an individual win in the 100 yard butterfly (56.82). Finishing second in that race was
Stephen Roe (La Grange, IL), who had earlier taken first in the 200 yard freestyle (1:55.85).
Brenner Hinds (Bay Head, NJ) and
Michael Grimerstein (Pittsburgh, PA), meanwhile, each earned two victories. Hinds was the winner in the 50 yard freestyle (23.06) and 100 yard backstroke (59.20), while Grimerstien was victorious in the 200 yard individual medley (2:11.36) and 100 yard freestyle (51.78).
Maritime's final event winner was diver
Uri Shakked (San Diego, CA). He tallied 122.75 points on the 1-meter board in his Privateer debut.
On the women's side, Maritime won both relays. The all-freshman quartet of
Zoe Marchetti (Key Largo, FL),
Lauren Barriteau (Laurelton, NY),
Mary Cirelli (Oreland, PA) and
Adelle Leger (Middletown, NY) recorded a 2:00.76 clocking in the 200 medley relay, while Marchetti and Barriteau joined with
Hannah Mesones (Spring Valley, NY) and
Maeve Lavery (Bronx, NY) to post a time of 1:56.96 in the 200 yard freestyle relay. Marchetti also earned an individual win in the 100 backstroke, finishing in 1:03.83.
Up next for the Privateers is a double dual meet hosted by Sarah Lawrence on Thursday. Maritime will take on Bard, as well as the host Gryphons at 6 p.m.
